velocity... deep v vs. aerohead

other than being 250gm lighter per set (aeroheads), and cheaper, what differences are there between the two rims? i know they look a little different, but are the deep v's that much better?

no. they're that much worse. deep v's that is.
aeroheads are in my opinion, better in every way shape and form for anyone under 200 pounds or whatever. deep v's are aero, but the only time i'd want them would be on the track, and even then there are better things to buy.

i ran the weinmann knock offs for cross, and would have rather had the aeroheads. they should be just as strong.

if you really have to think about it, get fusions. or at least, fusion in the back, aerohead in the front.

If you want to look fly, deep Vs. If you are concerned by aerodynamics and not weight (like on the track) then deep Vs. Otherwise go with Aeroheads.

Oh please. Do any of you really think you're getting any aero benefits out of the deep v's riding with rolled up jeans, messenger bag and toe straps? The only thing that 30mm aero section of the deep v's are good for is the added weight and strength. The aeroheads are excellent rims.

I like high polish silver non-machined Fusions for my track wheels.

I like silver Aeroheads for my street wheels

I like black Fusions for my road wheels

I hate Deep Vs for everything, they are heavy and they have no benefit for me. I weigh 170.

Perfect! I couldn't agree more. Thank you for the voice of reason. All these recurring stupid debates that go on in the forum (do these cranks flex? are these rims too heavy? et cetera) are all pointless as most of us ride for fun, to commute, to head to the bar. It would make my ******** day when I'd see someone riding around the city in jeans and some other unfriendly cycling clothes and be on a top-o'-the line Bianchi Concept and not be able to push his gear up a small hill. It annoyed me for awhile until I just let the love in and would laugh to myself at them. There are always going to be fools with gear they don't need but which makes them look cooler in their eyes to others.

Deep Vs are up there in terms of dislike with Brooks saddles in my book. The reason: both of them are usually misapplied (v's in horrible colors and brooks in overall bike style ways) to bicycles and ruin them.

You should just get some Mavics anyway.

36-Hole Black Open pro rear and a 32 hole front on those Dia-comp hubs there was a thread about is the new planned wheel set,(from V's on phills) its my hope that i Will not have to buy a wheel set until a car gets to them for my nice bike(hopefully somthing OX, or Tange Prestige,853 or maybe even Ti, all depends on the $$ situation), and Bicyclewheel.com Stuff of the lesser cycles

I got Fusions and Aeroheads. Hate Deep V's. If you think Aeroheads aren't going to be strong enough, either step up to 36 spokes or get some Fusions. I don't think there's any aero advabtage to Deep V's at all.

I'm glad this came up, as I have for a while been wondering why no one rides aeroheads and everyone rides deep V's. perhaps, even though aeroheads come in lots of colors, they are not as readily available?

also, re: brooks. some people hate on them. but they are comfy!

the copycat factor. person A sees person B riding shiny bike. person B has deep V's painted obnoxious red, person A goes out and buys deep V's.

I'm really liking the Aeroheads, they seem great all around (light, strong, come in colors, affordable, etc.). I just got a double-fixed Kogswell hub from Shants and I'm excited about building it up myself with a pink Aerohead. I've got some questions though:

Though I love having color, I could always do without it and have a nicer wheel (or even rattlecan later). Are there any superior rims under $60?

Also, since I'm just going to build up a rear, if I ended up building another pink Aerohead is there a possibility for a really poor color match? I'm not talking perfect, just enough of a mismatch to make it look bad?

Also can the average LBS order me an Aerohead or do they have to be Velocity dealers?

in my experience, the deep v powder coat batches are pretty consistent. most bike shops should have no issue ordering from velocity. sometimes you'll have to wait for a certain color if they're between runs.

the aerohead is seriously bad ass. do it up.

open pros, cxp33s **** even open sports are better then aeroheads if color choice isn't your metric and that's just what mavic has.

What are your favorite wheels for a street fixed gear bike?

theoretically? open-pro/14/15DB spokes/brass nipples/formulas. In practice those cxp22/unbutted spokes/formulas are so damn cheap it doesn't really make sense to buy anything else.

Open pros are deinitley NOT better than aeroheads. People need to seriously stop recommending this rim, their are equivalent if not hugely better rims out there for around the same price.

Just because all the roadies have it and everyone groupthinks it, doesn't mean it's the bomb.

no, but the welded seams and spoke eyelets paired with low weight do make open pros the bomb

what would you suggest? IMO aeroheads are ****. In every aspect they are of much lower quality then open-pros.

1. 0 eyelets vs double eyelets.
2. pinned joint vs welded.
3. hit or miss shape out of the box vs almost always come perfect.
3. The quality control at velocity is close to nonexistant and it took them years to replace the faulty extrusion mold for aeroheads.
4. better alloy.

Aeroheads are ****. The only redeeming qualities they have is the offcenter rear which is of no advantage for a ss/fg bike and the fact that they are sometimes available for really really cheap. At msrp they are overpriced **** that should only be purchased if you care more about color then quality.

Aren't CXP-33s as useless as Deep-Vs?

The main rims I've considered are Open Pro and Aerohead. The biggest differences for me between the OP and AH are that the OP is eyeletted and has a better seam, but the AH supposedly doesn't need eyelets and comes in the color I want.

I'm only building a rear with this heavy hub so I want something really tough, I don't care so much about weight (or a good brake surface) as I do about quality and durability. Even though I think Deep-V's are gaudy, I wonder if they're worth the extra weight.

Maybe this matters: I have a set of those already. I love them as basic workhorse wheels, they're light, tough as hell, and get the job done (till the locknuts break of course).
