Ok, so my girlfriend built herself a super sweet track frame designed for 650c wheels. She can't work teh internetz so it's up to me to find her some rims. I've done some scouring but can't really find what I want. Does anyone have the source for some nice 650c rims?

theres plenty in qpb. your LBS should be able to special order you a pair. velocity makes a bunch, as does mavic..

There's an ebay store - Ben's Cycle something-or-other - that has 650c tubular Velocity Deep-V's for about $28 each SHIPPED. Lots of drillings, so you can pretty much pick and choose.

Tubular is the only crappy part about it. Might be worth it to save $70 on a pair of Deep-V's...

i run a mavic open pro in the rear on a nashbar hub i like it so far it is lighter than the deep v and seems pretty strong so far avoid the sun m41a it sucks and failed on me

I'm pretty sure she wants to stay away from deep v's, if not for any other reason than she has them on another bike. Mavic would work, Campy of course, but it would be really cool to find some Arayas or something of the like, she's going to be building it up with mostly Japanese components.

Velocity makes a few models of 650C if you are looking for street wheels.

in review proper punctuation is my friend. in that pic there is a sun m14a in the front laced to a specialized hub cost about 15 bucks in parts. I originally had a m14a laced up in the rear to a nashbar hub but it split at the weld and came apart on me while riding.
in there rear there is a mavic open pro laced to a nashbar hub. I love it so far, and it weighs less than built up than just a deep v hoop.



from what I under stand the mavic cxp12 and the alex r390 are decent both come in 32h drillings

I know tubies aren't horrible, but not the easiest to deal with in regard to flats, changing tires, etc.

Oh, Cambria Bike has several 650 rims as well. Check 'em out. Nashbar still has a couple Sun CR-18 in 650 size as of my last time on the site.

There is nothing remotely difficult about tubulars, you just have to carry a tire instead of just a spare tube or patch kit. That's it.

If you wanna deal with carrying a tubular in your mess bag, do it (most of us have a bunch of tools much heavier than a tubular anyway). Or stuff it in your saddle rails for distance. They are easier to change in case of a flat, and won't flat just because you forgot to inflate them all the way and then you hit a pothole.

You just need to watch out for glass and stuff, which tend to make clincher tires unusable too.

I think I'm gonna build my 650 tri wheels up as tubulars, so we'll see how it goes.

650c is a dying standard by the way, going the way of 27's. It is difficult, but not impossible, to source cheap 650 tires, especially in colors.

I know from experience.

Someone let me know if they have a blue/red/celeste 650 tire

Tubulars are good for two places

1) Road Racing
2) Track Racing

If you're not doing either, do yourself a favour and get a clincher wheelset.

And also some glue. And something to remove the old glue residue from the rim. And about an hour to spare.

(I am being a little flippant, but seriously, tubies are a pain. How are you going to ride home on an unglued replacement tubular tire? Just hope the pressure keeps it from rolling off the rim?)
