Updates? I don't think it took the cops this long to reach the crash site.

There is no morals, bike chick blew the light and got handed some street justice. Cabbie now has to deal with the inevitable bull**** because some NY princess couldn't take the time out of her pressing social schedule to wait out a light.

Hm, there is no grammars either.
I love how quick bfssfg is always so quick to judge when the particulars of the situation aren't even known yet.
However, I will go ahead and judge that if she ran the light she is at fault. Also, do we know the taxi driver is a prick? I mean her (apparently) running the light certainly ****ed up his night.

Something I think everyone would benefit from knowing, friend got in accident somewhat recently, cops were called etc... short story and the point?

Cell phone pictures are not admissible in court.

Don't know why or even if this still applies... just... fyish

Then again... some restaurant got busted locally for having strippers, evidenced by some guy's cell phone...

Yeah, sorry, when i said he sounds like a prick was before the OP mentioned she ran the light. If she did run the light then it sounds like shes a prick. If you dont want to get hit by taxis dont ride out in front of them when they have a green light. Even if he was flying, she should have looked.*

*based purely on the limited evidence offered so far.

One of my regular rides involves a very wide intersection, where I face a steep uphill climb. The light does not have a sensor to activate. If a car comes up alongside me in the left lane, a camera sees the car and turns the light to green. By the time I have managed to get a quarter of the way through the intersection, the light has already turned yellow, and by the time I've gotten halfway through, it's already turned to red. This does not mean that I have run a red light, it means that the light has not been adjusted very well. I have written to the relevant traffic persons about the timing. It's being 'studied'. I start my crossings when it is legal for me to do, but cannot do anything about the fact that I am slower in getting across than a motor vehicle. I do move slightly faster than a snail, but not by much .

Your individual circumstances may vary. I do understand that the standard light sequence is green, yellow, red.

really now...lets think about this.

Regardless I hope your friend is ok, tell her to get brakes for 'oh ****' moments, and make sure she starts wearing a helmet if she isnt already.

And tell her what red means.

EDIT: And hustling from a large insurance company can add up to rates going up for all cyclists. just putting that out there.
how can it mean rates going up for all cyclists? I dont have insurance as a cyclist.

NY is a no fault state, meaning that it doesn't matter whose fault it is, if a bike and a car get in a wreck the driver's insurance is required to pay medical expenses for the cyclist. i'm fairly sure though that this does not cover property damage.

also, in nyc many of the lights are timed and in-sync which means cars get in the habit of flying down avenues expecting the light to change as soon as they get there. this results in cars hitting intersections at driving speed (30mphish) as soon as or slightly before the light changes which means it's really easy to get nailed if you begin traveling through a yellow light.

Hey, timebandit, is it really always the car driver's fault in Pennsylvania? I just looked over the cycling laws and I can't find anything for or against that statement, and I was just wondering where you found it.

Go to your room. You're grounded.

(PS, be glad I'm not your dad, I'd take away your bike for two weeks for that lip)

tell your friend to be happy that she is alive and not seriously hurt

and tell her not to run lights unless she likes this kind of event

then tell her to post shots of her mangled bike for all to enjoy

Frankly I'm amazed this doesn't happen all the time here in SF. Fixie riders are like a nightmare on the streets. When I'm driving I correlate hipsterness with probable disregard of traffic rules and try to predict what the cyclist's next move will be. I'm rarely wrong but they still manage to surprise me with some of the crazy irresponsible stuff hey pull.

For some reason hipster fixie girls tend to be much worse too. Don't know why.

Also: why does there appear to be consensus that the cabbie is a dick?
