I'll even start.

something in my drive chain is kind of loud and persistent. i cleaned and lubed the chain today but its still there. everything is really smooth, but could it still be the bottom bracket anyway?

I put on a 1/8 chain and cog yesterday but my chainring is 3/32. could this be why it's noisy now? I thought maybe it was just cus my new chain is cheap. everything was 3/32 before.

that could be one reason. the other could be if your chainring is hold. cogs/chains/chainrings wear out with eachother so when you change one it can cause there to be some extra noise since everythings not perfectly matching up anymore

hmm the chainring is "new" to me, but I got it used for $5 at the swap... doesn't look worn out tho. but certainly used, as opposed to the brand new cog.

Define loud and persistent. Clicking? Creaking?

One trick to see if it is your BB is to take the chain off, put your ear on the saddle, and spin the cranks. You should hear a whooshing sound if the BB is fine. Any grittiness will be easily heard.

If you're hearing a creak, take your BB out and grease the threads in your shell really well. A click could be anything from a pedal to a loose chainring bolt.

If you have a knew chain on a worn chainring you will be able to tell by installing the chain and looking at how it meshes with the teeth from the side.

Sorry about the lame Arrospok post, I couldn't resist.

What's the best way for me to try out riding only a fixie for a while, without having to commit to one? I work at an LBS, so I MIGHT be able to work out a sort of loaner program. The thing is, next year I'm moving out into a dorm (although only a few miles down the road), but I won't need my road bike's gearing anymore, as downtown/campus is flat enough to run fixed (I'll have brakes 'cause I'm lame and like my knees).

it would not be a bad idea to just buy a basic fixed rear wheel for a hundred or however much and just sell if you aren't feeling it.

i guess that would only work if your road frame has not-vertical drop outs though.

If you hear creaking, always check your chainring bolts first, one of them could be loose.

I don't know about the gr-9s, but I wear 11.5 and my sylvan tracks with XL clips fit like a glove.... errrr, sock I guess.

Hmmm... Hokie Spokes is a Fuji Dealer. That's not a half-bad idea. They've gone to a threadless 1 1/8" this year too. AND I could probably get one at lower cost.
