Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Has anyone gotten busted for any of these?

Has anyone here ever gotten a ticket/summons/warning for any of these things (not counting critical mass rides)?:

--riding in a marked bike lane the wrong way down a one-way
--no bell (ny law)
--going through a red light after coming to a complete stop
--having 1 brake
--riding with no hands (ny law)
--wearing headphones (ny law 1 headphone max)
--speeding...

If you ride in a bike lane the wrong way down a one way, I officially want to knock you off your bike and into traffic when I come through it going the right way. If you're going to ride the wrong way, atleast have the sense not to kill anyone else besides yourself: don't jeopordize all the cyclists who are actually following that simple, necessary law.

Anyways can't say I've ever been cited for any of these. I did get pulled over by a cop who said I didn't make a hand signal before turning right (honestly, who does that **** except if you think impending doom will ensue if you don't)? The cop than noticed I had no brakes and ticketed me for that instead. Gotta love the motorcycle cops.

+1. This is my worst pet peeve. It happens all the time in Santa Barbara. I seriously want to start carrying a chain Road Rash style. Don't play a game of chicken with me and force me into traffic when you're riding the wrong way on the street. **** that.

On topic, I have not been cited for any of that stuff, although I did get a $200 for not wearing a helmet at a skatepark once.

None of the cops where I live know what to do with someone on a bike, because hardly anyone rides bikes except the occasional pack of hard-core road riders, spandex, pointy helmets and aerodynamic sunglasses etc. I'm sure they'd ticket someone without a second thought if they new the laws regarding bikes...better hope they never get un-lazy.

I got a ticket for no headlight one night. I showed the officer my broken one as I had broken it a few hours earlier, but he didn't really care. Two nights later at the same intersection I watched the same officer give out 15 headlight tickets within a couple hours.

Dang, I thought you just needed a flashing rear light, and that a headlight wasnt necessary? Haha, uh oh.

I have been told to slow down, but that was because I was on the sidewalk doing a skid in front of the main office of downtown bike patrol office. it was kinda on purpose, plus they all ride mountain bikes and I wanted to see if they would give chase

best thing I ever saw was a Birmingham bicycle cop while riding a police bicycle bunny hop a curb drop a brown paper bag and a beer fell out

I have seen at least one person attach a small blinky to their hub to gain both foward and aft visibility. Kind of like those hub cleaners.

was questioned by cops once while riding *very* slowly (my friend was walking next to me, we both had mess bags filled to capacity with beer). they were wondering where we were going, what we were doing, where we were coming from, if we had been at some party...we weren't, blah blah blah, then they left

...live in a small town, nobody ever seems to know what the eff a fixed-gear is...

I've been pulled over a couple of times in DC.

Most memorable police experience while riding was in St. Peterburg though.

After Fixed Fight, babychris, mike shark, and myself went downtown for some pizza. We ran a red, swerved around a group of pedestrians, and went the wrong way down a one way all while having no lights.
The cops said they could write us $300 in tickets each if they wanted to. Then we said we were just in town from Philly. They said a Philly cop wouldn't let us do that, and we all laughed. Then I said that if they write the ticket, I have no means of paying for it. He ended up letting us go after busting our balls for a bit. Tourists were taking photos and screaming **** the whole time.

And then a brawl broke out outside the pizza shop and no cops came.

edit: felt the need to say that we only had to go one block on the one way, and there weren't any cars.

I have been pulled over for taking up 1/2 of a lane instead of the legal 1/3. I am not even sure that its the law. It amazing how he was so good at instant geometry. Serve and protect

On one of our midnight rides we decided to try to ride the 217 freeway (its a freeway that dead ends on campus so its never busy) back to campus at one in the morning. The cops pulled up behind us, but everyone turned around and rode the wrong way back down the entrance ramp and onto the surface streets where there were two more patrol cars waiting. We split up and it turned into a chase; I was lucky enough to get away but a bunch of people got caught. That was crazy.

Not busted for any, mostly because I follow all of the above rules.

That said, some people should be made to feel the consequences of not following them, for the purpose of education. Oh, and add riding without lights and reflectors during the night AND in the dark. Boy I hate those idiots.

What jurisdiction are you in? Does your area have some law on top of the typical "ability to lock up one wheel" law?

I've never been stopped for any of those, however I talked to a girl once in boston who claimed a cop grabbed her for speeding after she bombed a hill. Also, rumor has it that cambridge cops were busting people for running reds a lot.

A cop pulled me over a month ago because he thought I had no brakes. I showed him the front brake and explained that my feet where the rear brake, and he let me go. Must have been a very, very slow day.

I have never been stopped in Philly, but then our cops are pretty busy trying to lessen our astronomical murder rate, so I can hardly blame them.

Interestingly, however, I was riding alongside a Temple bike cop one day, so I decided not to run any reds. Turns out this guy was pretty sweet, because while I was trackstanding, he came up along side me and asked if I wanted to race. Of course I did, so we blew down about a mile or two of Broad Street to city hall without stopping for red lights. I managed to win, but only because the dude was on a MTB - he had quads of thunder.

It was pretty much the most surreal/amazing bicycle experience that I've ever had.

Right where the LFP in Chicago ends, there are two one-way roads that connect with Granville/Devon, both with bicycle lanes on them, Kenmore northbound, Winthrop heading south. Without fail, I see cyclists, from team-sponsored roadies to commuters to old dudes on rustheaps, riding south on Kenmore against traffic, when they could easily go one block west and come south on Winthrop. I don't know if these people are either ignorant of the fact that there's a street with a bikelane only one block away, or they're idiots, but either way, it's annoying.

I usually don't say anything, as it's not my job to police Chicago's cyclists, but at some point this is going to piss me off for the last time and I'll throw my pump through someone's spokes.
