Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Newbie wants to lose braze ons

Hi. I'm fixing my old 86 Schwinn Traveler. I'm using the opportunity of removing all the extra parts from my bike to paint the frame as well. As part of this process, I'd like to lose the cable braze ons and the droptube shifter braze ons. What is the best way to do this? Hacksaw and file? Heat until the brass parts melt? Others? Thanks for your assistance.

do NOT use heat! a file is best, but i woudn't reccommend taking anything off the bike. especially the downtube shifter bosses. the way they're put in on old frames sometimes actually weakens the frames, so taking them out can weaken them even more...especially if you want to do it with a heat gun.

Just make sure you do as I did, and apply a coat of the ugliest primer you can find when you're done.
And, no, I don't plan on painting the bike either, I like it fugly.
