Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Fixed / Single Racing in Portland

I've been biking for years but due to a knee injury that is going to keep me from running I want to start biking more seriously and this includes racing.

What kind of options are available in Portland, OR for fixed or single speed bike racing? I know about cyclocross and the the mt. tabor series. Is there anything else?

Are there clubs specific to fixed/singlespeed riding or does everyone just hook up with some of the local clubs for weekend long rides?

I seem to recall seeing the occasional alleycat/ride in the PDX area. Its a great city to just ride around in. I would say your best bet to run into folks and find people is to hop on your bike and barhop through the burnside/downtown area. I seem to run into lots of guys in that area when I've been in portland. If you ever find yourself in the center of washington passing through hit me with a pm before hand and we can find somewhere to ride.

Track racing at Alpenrose and the occassional alleycat are your best bet.

Yeah, this is why i hoping to get into track racing, cause there isnt much organization of SSFG around. The SS Cyclo interests me too, anyone have any info on them?

Anyone know of any good places to find upcoming events? I check BikePortland, Zoobomb, and Shift.

River City has weekly fixed gear rides on Saturdays during the winter.

OBRA's calendar has several fixed gear road races. In Eugene, there is a weekly fixed crit series, like the Mt Tabor series. The Kermesses they've been putting on lately all have singlespeed categories. The short track MTB series also has a singlespeed category.

I think overall there are more opportunities for crit-style racing for SS/FG 'cross bikes. Otherwise, I'd stick to the track.
