fixed gear chainring wear

my chainring is worn enough that its not that round any more....i can see the chain tighten, then loosen on each pedal stroke. i was thinking id like the chainring to wear more evenly to get more life out of my chainwheel.

is it a good or bad idea to rotate the chain ring (take it off and rebolt in a different spot) to lengthen its life? after it wears a little more and hopefully evens it out would it be a bad idea to flip the ring over so the other side of the teeth are pulling the chain?

one more note, last week or so i posted on winter fixed gear riding, and how i was so excited for winter again, but the server crashed and a lot of the new posts were lost, so i didnt get to see the replies...im still curious to to what you all had to say!! lemme know!

chainrings aren't 100% round. you can get a brand new chainring and you'll still notice an increase and decrease in chain tension every revolution.

i'd say keep a close eye on chain wear, then on cog wear. your chainring should last you a while. hell, your cog should even last you a while if you've got a decent one. a friend of mine has been racing on the same cog for at least 10 years now.

Additionally, the chainring may not be centered perfectly on the crank. I believe Sheldon Brown's site has a little write up about how to adjust that.. Go to the fixed gear section, then the conversion section, then down to "chain tension."

how out of round should the ring get before it needs to be replaced? I've got a fuji track with the stock ring and if I tension the chain so that it has a 1/2 inch of play or so, I'll turn the cranks halfway and it'll have an inch and a half. I know that with many products, the factory installed components are generally crap. Is this true with new low-end track bikes (fuji, bianchi, khs)?

i have a ton of discrepency between tightest and loosest point on my fixed bike. i think it's a combination of chainring not being centered and round, and the chain having stretched only in certain parts.. i've rotated the chain around, i'll see if that helps.

TimArchy, when it comes to bikes, you really get what you pay for; there are no killer deals... a high end dura ace or campy crankset will leave almost no play between the chainring and the crank (no need to center it) and the chainring will be perfectly round. i have higher end components on my track bike (even though the cranks are 15 years old) and the play in my chain goes from 1/2 inch to about a 3/4 inch, which is minimal.
