Japanese Vista conversion, crankset doesn't have arms-ideas?

My chain rings aren't bolted to my crankset-they sit on small ledges protruding from the back of my crankset. Most of the 80's road bike conversions I've seen had bolts, which made it fairly simple (just attach a new chain ring with shorter bolts). With this type of crankset-how can I switch out the chain ring sizes without purchasing a new crankset? (Sorry if my terminology is a bit off, I'm not sure what to call the large guard the chain rings are attached to.)

I was thinking about cutting off the guard around the edges, then drilling/tapping holes to attach a new chainring to. Any other ideas? I was planning on buying a new wheelset, I cant afford a new crankset as well.

I drew green circles around the ledges that the chainring sits on and I've put purple dotted lines where I'd cut, if I decided to go in that direction.

Here is a picture:

Your best bet is just to scrounge up a different crank entirely. My girlfriend's SS conversion had one of those originally. There are a ton of old cranks floating around for next to nothing if you're cool with not having an actual track crank.

Buy a cheapo track crankset off ebay. Bulletproof for like 35 dollars is probably the cheapest. Or thrift shop/dumpster/buy a cheapo crankset.

Sounds like a lot of time and effort. And I reckon it'd be difficult to get it perfect. Are you planning on using the inner ring? Or buying a new chainring anyway?

If it were me, I'd look on ebay / craigslist / bike co-ops to get one of the multitude of cheap cranksets that are available. They're even cheaper if you just buy the drive side.

A quick check of ebay looking for crank/cranksets that sold for less than $10 in the last month revealed 66 matches. While quite a few of these are items that didn't meet reserve, at least half of them are just cheap cranksets that few people want.

All right, I'll scrounge around for a new set.

Will those do the trick?

I want to make sure they fit before I order them..
