I'd have to say that the "ultimate" shoe for those looking to capture some sort of instantaneous, comprehensive fixed gear "look" has to be Vans slip-ons.
Any sort of indoor soccer shoe tends to be good for cycling in toe clips, as they have a pretty low profile and slim toe with a decently stiff sole.
What does amuse me is that when I was growing up I'd get called a "soccer ***" if I wore my indoor shoes around and yet now the slipper shoe/Euro trainer shoe is all the rage, even amongst the type of big meathead, weight lifting dudes who would call me names not so long ago...Ahh, how the fashion world turns

I've got three pairs of asics(mexico 66, LA Fencing, Tai Chi).
The mexico 66's are pretty much retired, because there is little to no sole left after wearing them day in day out for about two-three years.
The Tai Chi's fit the nicest or the three into clips/straps, and have the stiffest sole out of the bunch. I love them for riding, but i also wear them the least of my shoes. Yellow/black kill bill color combo, i try keeping them in a bit nicer shape than the others, but then again, they are already scuffed a bit from riding so i probably shouldn't be so protective of them.
The Fencing LA are sort of in between the two for stiffness, but have an overall fit like the mexico 66's.
I love asics, and see no reason to bother messing around with any other shoe.

i was thinking of getting a pair of tai chis. gonna try em out now, couldnt find good feedback from them.
my fencing ones finally quit after 2 years. a bit too soft for me. the mexicos were perfect as far as the comfort of their stiffness/flexability.
gonna pick these up and try em out. just intime too. i needed a new pair of shoes. good looking out!

Just kidding.... But seriously, because I don't know you personally, I have no idea how long it's been since you were a junior in high school. I am curious, though, as I have thought about getting some of these but was worried about durability...

I had a pair of these - you know how the sole comes up at the toe? That came unglued within two weeks, and then the rest of the sole followed shortly after. I'm convinced I got a defective pair.

I have a pair of these, they work pretty well for getting in and out of clips, but they suck when it's real wet because they're like socks with soles on them.

yeah, they are super comfy and last forever. for those that say they can't find them, have you tried going to the closest mall and looking in journeyz? around here they are in every journeyz store.

what a bunch of tools. put the word 'keirin' on something (even something completely unrelated to cycling like a pair of tennis shoes) and have a legion of ******bag fixie hipsters lined up to buy it. i wish i was a business man.

Hm, I didn't intend for this to turn into another cycling shoes thread, but whatever.
Let's get back on topic and talk about how badass Onitsuka Tigers are and how post-modern we look in them.
I have a couple pairs. They've lasted me a long time, but mostly because I rotate them with 5 other pairs of shoes and have a very dainty step.
In all seriousness, having shoes with grooves to engage the track pedals that most people inappropriately use would be sorta cool. Perhaps even worthy of the use of the words Keirin, Fixed Gear, Pista, etc. name, or a stylized NJS stamp.
