I told some people and they said "you gave some random dude that called you all of your info" and I felt sort of strange. Then spicer posted up my name on that bikes page and now I know I'm not imagining it or getting taken for my credit info.

Now I have to sell my old bike for money to build up this one.

Definitely. He is mailing it out on monday. I am getting the exact one in the picture because its my size. He was psyched that he didn't have to build another one. I'll post the build in this thread once I get the frame/parts.

this is my weird one, from the pics thread.

Now that you mention it... Gene just emailed me asking what bottom bracket/cranks/chainring I am going to use. He wants to play around with the frame to see how the chain line works out. Originally I was going to use the truvativ touro set up that I have on my current bike but I really don't want to put such a crappy set up on my new bike. What do you guys think I should go with? My experience with good parts is limited due to my poor college student status so I really don't know what to go with. I am prepared to spend some cash on this bike since the frame was free and I will probably be selling my other fixed gear. Gene reccomends a square taper bottom bracket for this frame.

What do you guys recommend? I have heard good things about the sugino 75 cranks/bracket but I have also heard that the are basically the same as messengers at a higher price. I have also heard good stuff about the RD.

edit: And, Gene has been great to deal with. Super nice.

is very very stiff. obviously. but pretty light and absolutely bizzare. i think it's going to be polo bike/ bad weather beater, for a while at least, since its Aluminum.

i wouldn't go selling your other bike though. mine's nice for riding around campus etc, but i feel pretty beat up over 40 miles. some of that's the stupid set up though. i kept my other bike, and good thing, too.

75's are top of the line 1970's technology. Still perfectly fine, just overpriced. I'd do something crazy for a weird frame, probably the FSA vigorelli, though it is $$$. You can get a bb for it that has adjustable chainline, though, so that would help with this I guess.

It's RD's that are the same as messengers. Neither have good chainline, avoid at all costs.

Thanks, you probably saved me a lot of hassle with that info. The cranks and bottom bracket are probably the only parts that I will be buying immediately. I've decided to keep my old bike and recycle as many parts off of it onto this new bike until I can save up for parts. That way I can still have my old frame if the aluminum bolt holes (where the steel track ends bolt onto the frame) get worn. I guess this design has not seen enough miles to tell exactly what will happen. Spicer actually made a point to call me and tell me that which really impressed me. They are going out of their way to make sure this works even though I am not a paying customer.

I like that pink spicer. It looks like the world most high tech mixte.

Hey man, Miche's or Stronglights are both good options. Nicer than the RD's, but still (kind of) economical. John at Businesscycles can hook it up.

Also, the Miche has an adjustable BB for chainline fine-tuning.

What kind of wheelset are you running?

If Gene said he can play with the frame to get the chainline right, I don't see any reason not to go with the messengers/rd's. That seems to be the only issue I've ever heard of people having with them, and even then lots of people run them problem free. Besides, you can get them on the cheap from benscycle. Also, with the way those chainstays are designed, it seems like there is really no chance of you having your chainring bumping up against them, which might happen with other frames when using the RD/messengers because they use such a small BB to get a good chainline.

Basically, I'd ask Gene and see what he says. If that doesn't work out there are always the IRO/Alien/Andel cranks which seem to be a good buy, and I've never heard of anybody having any problems with them. IMO people spend waaay too much money on cranks in most cases.

I've posted the very frame that is the subject of this thread, while it was unpainted, in the jackass thread.

I am sorry to say, I find that frame 108% jackass.

Just because you think it's ugly? I mean, that's fine, i don't expect everyone to agree on looks.

Yes.

Besides, since nobody was riding that bike (forgot to say: the frame, albeit not yet painted, was built up) I didn't feel too bad about posting it. At least I didn't offend any one person.
