Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

make my decision for me.

okay im new and im sorry for the stupid question but yesterday i bought 2 complete bikes for ten each. both 80's models i think. the frames need a good coat of paint other than that they are good.
one is a schwinn world wide and the other is a takara but i dont know what model cause it has a bad spray job covering most of it. which of these do you think would be better to convert into a ss or fg?
i plan on doing both but dont know which i should do first.

i just plan on using the frames, forks and maybe the drop bars for these bikes. alot of the components look like there in pretty bad shape.

thanks in advance

well if you are gonna do both why not just grab one and start taking stuff off?

also use sheldon brown's site for everything you will ever need to know.

Takara is a Japanese maker, I would try and locate the sticker that tells the materials each frame is made from, its usually on the seat tube. Schwinn has made many many bikes, not all of which are decent, and now is a wal-mart brand made in taiwan I believe. I would find the schwinn model etc. The tubing type would probably be my first check. Also look at the drop outs, are they stamped or forged and look to see if the frames are lugged. If you have questions about how to locate/find out about any of these criteria look it up on sheldon's website. It's a treasure trove of info on bikes, old and new and probably the best fixed gear/conversion resource out there. Good luck!

okay well today i took the schwinn apart to take it for powder coating this week. i think ill be able to reuse more than i thought i would be able to. i chose the schwinn to do first cause more parts looked like they could be re used and it seemed lighter. im hopeing to get alot of it done on my day off. so hopedully there will be some photos soon.
