the 23's cut down to the road. they track great, but there is very little warning before they break loose. so you are either in control or not, there is very little middle ground.
where as the 52c's floated, which meant most of the ride was me drifting back and forth. a buddy caught up to me on his road bike while we were riding (there was about 10cm of snow, lightly packed) and his line was dead straight, and mine looked like a drunken snake. But with the big wheels loosing control never happened, because you were never truly in control. so it meant when something un expected happened (streetcar tracks) i just kinda took it in stride and kept rolling, where as with the narrow tires the exact same thing happened 2 weeks later, and i ate the road doing 30km/h.
i love the 23c's and i rode brakeless most of the winter (smashed the brake hitting the road at 30km/h).
just to give you an idea, i love mountain biking, and am very comfortable on that bike. So it wasn't as if i wasn't use to the bike, or didn't know how to handle it. if anything i know it better then my iro.

Yeah but under snow there is ice, even worse. Maybe I need to refine my skills.

Wool or synthetic (capilene, etc) base layers, with a slightly heavier mid layer (wool or fleece). Check out the winter biking forum - great info on there!

My lovely Raleigh Rush Hour. Park it in clear skies, come back 3 hours later from class and it's covered in icy snow.
By the way, the red flashing light is a Planet Bike SuperFlash, which I wholeheartedly recommend - but get the red/white one, and not the black one. I had to return two black ones directly to Planet Bike, but they're super responsive about that kind of thing.

Some footage from last year, warm day, trail got soft, riding was slow, but fun. Hopefully we will get some better footage this winter.

my IRO is very similar to your setup that started this all.
