Preferred Tire Width
What are you guys saying? I ride 27X700s right now, I'm not a math-magician, or a physicologist, but if I went down to say 23X700, I would presumably go faster. I'm not really sure, though. Any balance issues? Wear and tear issues? or is my assumption completely wrong?

Not necessarily. On very good pavement, you may go faster (maybe). On anything that is a bit choppy, you probably wouldn't gain anything and you may in fact loose a bit.

I ride 25's, and 23's. My 23's are faster then my 25's but they also transmit more road vibrations and they make my steering a bit twitchy.. more so then my 25's. 23's have less resistance which make you faster, but they are also more prone to flats, more prone to snake bites if you are hopping curbs, and are also more prone to be led into road cracks and the like.
If I want to go for a bit less resistance, I go for my 23's. They don't ride as nice as a wider tire though.

You go faster as you decrease tire size, up to a point. This point is debatble - I like to think it's around the 700x23c mark. Assuming of course, you're not racing or doing specialist events like say on the track.

i ride 700 23. that's what everyone rides, and what all my bikes have. my grocery bike will have 700 35.
i wish i hadn't answered. your threads are for the birds. typing 700c into google gives you a sheldon brown article.
i hate the wonder years because of you.

Yeah, I ride mostly on decently smooth streets, as I live smack dab in the center of tourist town, and I don't hop up, or even down curbs, mostly because I'm too cheap to have my wheels trued.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I ride on a 700:25 front and 700:28 rear on my '62 Peugeot and have some 27 by 1 Panaracers on on my 1940 CCM.
My fixed mtb runs some 26 by 2 Schwalbe Hurricanes which are a very fast rolling semi slick.
I'll probably run 23's on my '73 Carlton road bike as it's sole purpose in life will be to go as fast as possible.

Yesterday I went on a website and it said that the holocaust didn't happen, I guess since I went to one source and it said so, I should follow it, right?

Yeah, because going to Sheldon Brown gives me one man's perspective. Although he is probably the most trustworthy duder, I still think it is important to get the opinions of other riders.

On an ideal glass surface road, the smaller the tires, the higher the inflation pressure and the less rolling resistance encountered.

if google is too tricky for you, use the bf search function. "what tire width" is up there with "can you run a brake on powdercoated rims" and "what fixie can i buy for $300".

Accuracy of measurement varies a lot in my experience with 20-25mm tires. 19 or 20's are almost always as they're labeled, but tires labeled 23's can often be 25's or slightly wider. I think Sheldon (RIP) wrote about this.
Oh, and now I run 23's that are more like 25's. I used to run 20 in the back and 19 up front in the city--don't know what I was thinking.

i would prefer a messageboard without people like you.
i hate that unintelligent people know that the internet exists.
let me rephrase that--
it's not your question, it's the illogical way that you asked it and the fact that it's been discussed SO FREQUENTLY on this board coupled with the fact that you opened with a racist comment, coupled with the fact that you constantly post annoying, useless garbage on the forum.
consider this the straw on the back of today's proverbial camel.

I'm not even going to continue this argument. You obviously think you're a Sheldon Brown and Lance Armstrong hybrid and I should bow down to you. Have fun being the best.

stop arguing. we're talking about tires.
i run 700x23 most of the time. i prefer 700x25, feels a bit more stable and less bumpy for a small trade off in speed on open roads, but it lasts a little longer too. with that said, most of my favorite tires are only stocked in 23 at the majority of LBS's. i'm about to do 700x28 in the rear becaues the tire was free, with 700x23 in the front, so we'll see how that goes, hopefully my bum is more comfy.

Is that an option too? keeping a 27 in the back, and slapping a 23 in the front?

Ive been running a 700x23 on the back and 700x20 on the front. Felt no diff than riding 700x23 on both, other than a little more jittery. 700x23 are a great sport size, but if you are touring or just getting around town a bit bigger would not hurt. I had 700x25 on my touring bike (and not that its gone run them on my beater/grocery bike).
We arent talking astronomical differences here. I mean if you went from from 700x28 to 700x23 and averaged 1-2 mph higher it would probably mostly be from a placebo effect than the lower rolling resistance.
To the sp00k/ryan garbage, yeah searching would have probably found most the answers but if you dont care for the thread ignore it.

I am currently riding 700x35 studded Nokian tires (Hakkasomething).
They are significantly more badass than I am, so I do not utilize them to their fullest potential. I think I may be getting a pair of 700x28-32 cross tires soon to finish out the winter with.
