Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

A different approach to rollers...

Sometimes when I'm about to finish riding rollers, I'll gradually slow my RPMs until I'm literally pedaling as slow as I possibly can while still staying upright. Does anyone else do this, and do you think it adds to balance or handling when you're on the bike (i.e. riding in ****ty conditions, mud, ice, going really sloooowww...) ?

I actually don't think rollers help my handling at all...I could see them helping my position on bike and stroke/smoothness....

Andre, I do the same. I slow to a track stand and just lean off the the side to dismount.

I don't turn the wheel. I am a late comer to the "fixed scene." I tend to think that I have good balance racing downhill bikes and messing around with trials during college. I'm just a road going fairweather poosy now.

I slow down as well.
I dont know if it helps, but it makes me more comfortable getting off.

Yep Andre I agree, going slow on rollers seems to help the slow speed balance

The bike shop I ride for has some old school rollers with ball bearings that are butter. After trying to pedal backwards I turned the bike around with the front wheel on the rear rollers and it makes it possible. But not easy.
