SS Newbie...

Finally coming close to my SS dream reality. Have an old Fuji DelRey w/chrome tip fork(which the painter preserved) sandblasted and powdercoated for 75.00(got a deal as the shop was doing a large run of stuff in the same color) metalflake black w/a clear coat over the whole frame and forks. It really pops when the sunlight hits it, other wise pretty sudued. So, the components look like this: Sugino 103mm Track BB, KMC 1/2-3/32 ss chain, silver. Black 44t Rocket Ring, 18t ACS freewheel, chrome. Black Bulletproof 170mm cranks w/110 bolt pattern. Sun CR-18 rim, rear 36h, w/older bolt on free wheel hub w/new bearings. Front is a qr 32h shimano w/Sun CR-18 rim. Tires will be 125 psi 28mm airless from Nu-Teck. Stock Levers. Stock calipers w/new springs and pads. Shimano dual clipless pedals, stock Nitto bars and stem and an old Secialized Ergo saddle. Stock post. Dia Compe headset w/new bearing rings. Ordering parts this week from 2 different sources for under 120.00 including shipping. Any suggestions? Maybe a beefier chain? I've wanted to get into SS and Fixie for a few years now and finaly have, the funds, time and commute worthy. Thanks in advance for any responses.

Waffen SS or just regular SS?

Chain will be fine. Sounds like a cool build!

I would change the BCD (144 just looks better, IMO) :) and maybe spend like $10 more to get an FSA Pro Track ring or something. Don't like the look of those Rocket Rings. But these are superficial suggestions, of course.

Gotta plead ignorance between Waffen and regular SS. My assumption my bike's just regular as I'm not doing any other mods. It'll look just like a regular road bike except no der hanger or gearing. I've assessed my 40 mi rt commute and figure the 44x18 is a good starting point given my age, conditioning etc. There's alot of long climbs(3,4 or 5%)and some short steep(12-15%) ones, too. I'll be doing alot of standing and switchbacks(maybe)the first week or so, but I'm excited about taking this step. A fixie's next, of course. :)

Yeah, I was going to get an FSA Ring from Universalcycles, but the combo of the Sugino 130mm bolt pattern(75.00)cranks and the FSA Chainring(45.00) was going to cost and I'm on a real tight budget. I've been unemployed for a while. Heck, there's a Campy 102mm sq bb on bikepartsusa.com I would love to get, but it's 134.00+ship, so that's out. I run RR on two other commuters(rb and mtb-48t and 46t, respectively)and am happy w/t performance, but I know what you mean about the 'look'.

BTW, thanks for taking the time to post. It's going to take 2 weeks - a month before it's together and complete, but I'll post pics asa it's done.

:cry::roflmao:

165 might be better for the cranks if you want to go FG later on

2.4 is honestly a pretty low ratio, but whatever you're comfortable with. I downgraded from 3.0 to 2.8 recently for more skid patches, and I spin out on larger hills a lot... but since you're using it with freewheel, no big deal I guess.

Shoulda known sumthin' was up. Got me...big time. I called a close bike geek friend of mine today to ask him if he'd heard of Waffen Single Speeds? Like was it a special gear combo, make of bike, hb configuration...? What? He said, "Dude, you've been had...just go home and googlesearch it." Scalded on my first SS/Fixie post...very cool. I think I'm gonna like it here.

tradtimbo...I'll post pics asa it's done...maybe while the build is going on. The frame/fork are painted and I'm awaiting budget clearance for the parts in about 2 weeks. Once I realized the joke this thread went from confusing to very funny. You guys play rough, but fair. :p BTW, I'm Welsh-American...Celtic, not Saxon. ;)

Thanks for the kudos. Ran an experiment to see what gearing I may be able to get away with given my age and conditioning and found that a little higher on the chainring-45 or 46t and a lower freewheel, maybe 17t combined w/165mm cranks may give me the leverage needed on the steeper hills. Pulled my entire 20 mile commute home tonight w/48x16 w/172.5 cranks. It wasn't easy and I felt like gearing down a few times but I perservered and have a new confidence. Thanks for all your posts and my wife and I are going to take some pics this Sunday of the frame/fork/wheels, etc. so there's some semblance of an idea as to what the final will look like. BTW, I'm going to build a fixie, too, asa I get used to this one. Old Nishiki w/t same sandblast/pc deal only in siver metalflake instead of black. No chrome tips, though.
