Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Fixed in New Jersey

So i started riding fixed a couple months ago down in DC where I go to school, and I'm home in New Jersey for spring break. I live in monmouth county. I was wondering if anyone knew any good shops in the area, good places to ride, etc. Thanks a lot

I grew up in Middletown. I'm not sure how, if you are also from Monmouth County, you don't know places with nice shops and stuff.

Try red bank, freehold, riding along the beach, ect.

If you are looking for something more specific, let me know.

Wheelfine Imports in Lambertville has some high end fixed gear components and frames. I don't know of any bike shops in NJ specializing in fixed gears though.

I'm from jersey and now live in VT. There are no real fixed shops in central jersey... my friend scott loves fixed gears and works at shrewsbury bicycles right outside red bank (765 rt 35 in Shrewsbury). They can order a bunch of stuff and they're a pretty decent place, as is Freehold Bicycle in Freehold, NJ. NJ drivers hate bicycles.
I'll be back in jersey full time after graduation in May, I'll be destroying the jersey shore with my friends all summer. Biking by the shore is where its at

nick, do you go to AU? It seems like the entire state of NJ migrates down here to go to school

nj migrates outwards exponentially. Its the most densely populate state so when kids hit college age they leave in hordes (UVM has a ton of jerseyians too)

Yeah I'm not too far from red bank (about a 12 minute drive) I just haven't really ridden a lot in New Jersey. When I was younger I used to BMX to friends houses etc, and I picked up riding last year when I went to school and ended up spending a lot of my summer helping take care of my sick grandma so I didn't ride too much around here, but when I did I was riding a hybrid bike which pretty much let me ride wherever so i was just looking on some advice for nicer roads and stuff.

I actually checked out shrewsbury cycles today because I had actually bought some lights and reflectors from them last year and remembered looking like a solid place but I didn't notice anything really fixed specific or anything. I didn't talk to any body though. I'll definitely give it another try and ask to talk to scott. If you see a red Nishiki Century conversion around the shore this summer that'll be me.

yea shrewsbury definitely doesnt carry anything fixed specific, but I'm told they can order stuff, but virtually any bike shop can. Scott, however, is being trained to be a mechanic and has been riding fixed for like a year, but has been riding bikes his whole life and knows whats up.

North NJ

Hey nice to see some fixed riders in NJ
Im from Tenafly so about 10 min from the GWB and have been going to the city for a lot of my fixie parts etc.. but came to realize that the fixed scene is so on fire over there that they have short stock on alot of different items. I went by my local shop yesterday in Tenafly (Bicycle Workshop) and to my suprise they had some fixie specific stuff there. I rolled in with my pista concept and noticed they had phil hubs, the eno eccentric, some bareknuckle frames!! You cant find a bareknuckle frame in a decent size in NYC.
I talked shop with a couple of the people there and they said they will be getting more fixed/track stuff. Awesome shop just not open on mondays for some reason.
its on tenafly road in tenafly
