Help on my gearing

So i got a fixie that was almost perfect from a guy off craigslist. the only problem is that the chain ring/sprocket is to high, so high that i cant do the whole skip and stop braking. Currently its set up at 44/15. So i want to get a different gear set up. But do not know how many tooth's for each, i should get.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So you just got the bike? Like Today or yesterday?

there is a thread almost identical to this directly above yours.

uhh. practice skidding?

try a 17 in the back. As a general rule of thumb, 1 tooth in the rear= 3 in the front. a 17 will put you at a comfortable gearing for skipping and skidding etc, and give you plenty of skid patches. Please, if you dont have one now, put on a front brake.

Do you have clips n straps? I started out on a 3.0 (2.8 now for more skid patches) and could skid easily after I got them.

if i get a 17 in back, can i keep the 44 up front? or do i have to get a 51 chain ring.

conor 03-23-08 10:50 AM

why a 51, out of curiosity? you can keep the 44, might need to remove a link or two from your chain to get good tension. i'd keep the 44 for now, and if you find yourself spinning too much, switch it out for something bigger.

but seriously. if you like how this feels now, and you just can't skid, don't change it. skidding takes practice. search the forum for tips.
