Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Half-Link Solutions?

I need a way to make a half link that doesn't involve a half link. i'm trying to get the tension right on my SS MTB, and there are no shops that have links. i'm thinking of running a masterlink through both a male and female chain end. is there any reason why this wouldn't be strong enough?

Try hardware stores or places that sell equipment, if you need to just order a half link and wait a couple days. Trying to run a master link though the female end of a chain sounds like a bad idea to me. It would bind and you'd feel it as you pedal. Good chance it would break too.

the issue is that i need it to race this weekend, so i called the lbs on monday to ask if they had them, and the (stupid) employee said yeah, we've got tons.
apparently he confused half like with chain links, because i got in today (after not either having them order one or ordering one myself) to find out that i'm going to be totally screwed. thanks, lbs.

Maybe somebody on here thats good with trig can tell you a freewheel/chainring size that would work without an odd link.

Good luck.

If you can't find anyone, just get an old derailleur and use it as a tensioner. Another perk with this is you can run whatever gearing you want instead of being tied to a magic gear.

Well, this probably won't work but you could try it. If you have any spare small chainrings try sticking one between the bottom and top runs of the chain towards the rear. I doubt you'll be able to get it in without hitting the chain stay, but you might get lucky. It sounds janky as hell, but it works great if you can fit it in there.

Edit: found a picture...

I'm great with math/trig but am unfamiliar with the calculations required to find a magic gear. I can look it up if you want to go that route.

adding or subtracting a tooth from either chainring or cog will allow you to remove a full link cleanly, with no need for a half-link.

sprocket tooth = half-inch
half link = half-inch
full link = one inch

Not only does he bump an ancient thread, his post also contains incorrect information.

Going up or down one tooth on the cog equals HALF the adjustment of adding or subtracting a half link.

Lets run with oldness. I've been daydreaming about putting together an SS MTB lately.
