OT: My city (Burlington, VT) is hosting 1st critical mass

what should I expect?
I've heard stories about NY/Boston etc and I'm not exactly excited for the prospect of a bunch of people taking it too far and the police needing to be involved as a result

We have small ones here, I think the largest was about 50-60. Average probably 20-30 when it's warm. Never had any problems with cops or the city. One time a guy driving by did throw a water bottle at us though.

I don't think anyone has real problems with the smaller groups. We'll stop when it makes sense to, and block traffic when it makes sense to. I wouldn't worry about it, especially for the first one.

ps I was born there <3

yeah new orleans is sort of the same, usually about 20-30 people show up. we've had a few clashes with cops on bigger rides, and when people are acting particularly idiotic, but outside of that it's usually just a nice ride.

hey when is it?
sounds like a roadtrip, maybe i can stock up at the brewery too

Invite some local cycling politicians if you want media fanfare.

How is this off topic? Seems to me that SS/FG would be represented at a CM like any other bunch of cyclists ;)

Who in the hell keeps reporting threads? Quit wasting everyone's time.

sirpoopalot 03-25-08 03:40 PM

uhh, actually burlington vt has had critical masses before..whatever hijinks scheduled for friday are certainly not the first..maybe the first since you started ridin bikes... i lived there for a spell a few years ago.

brett jerk 03-25-08 03:40 PM

I set it as OT because it probably belongs in the "advocacy & safety" but I don't know any of the people in that forum and it's scary

I've only lived here a year and was told it was the first. I know they've had "fun rides" for a long time which is almost the same thing, except not as directly representational of the politics of cycling.

also I started riding bikes when I was 6, as I'm sure most people have. I'm not really sure if that was supposed to be a jab at me or not, but I'm going to take the kindhearted route and assume you lived in Burlington 18+ years ago

sirpoopalot 03-25-08 03:43 PM

naah, they were mos def crit mass rides, i dunno of any "fun" rides though

i'm not sure when the first in btv was, the ones goin on a few years ago were def not the first, it looks like they may have died out for a bit, now resurrected

should be funnn tho

I think the OP himself put it down as OT.

I definitely did.

Tom Stormcrowe 03-25-08 05:52 PM

There wasn't a report, I was actually trying to participate in the thread. ;) It looked interesting to me and I figured why not chime in? I was responding specifically to the OT in the title :D

hay how wuz teh mass?

mattface 03-31-08 03:41 PM

Never been to a critical mass in Burlington, but was at World Naked Bike Ride a year ago, and the police were watching, waving at us, but not interfering. We did take up the whole road just like a critical mass, but ya know naked. I would expect any ride in Burlington to be light hearted and fun. It's that kinda town.
