Not exactly SS conversion
Got a weird idea. I'm looking to do first conversion of a trek commuter I don't really like. What I want to do is make a two speeder or a four speeder. With the two speeder I would want to have two chainrings on the crank to do the shifting and a single speed hub. With the four speeder it would be a two-two set up where I'd have to space out cogs on the hub. I am basically new to all this so what I'm really wondering is if this is even possible. Thanks

If you're shifting gears up front, you're going to need a chain tensioner or derailleur anyway, so you might as well keep it a single chainring and go multi-geared on the back. Maybe something like 14-18-24-32?

The Rivendell Quickbeam comes with a double chainring setup. Check the White Industries DOS ENO freewheels and cranks. Same idea.
The trick would be getting 4 usable gears without having to shorten or lengthen the chain.

I've always wanted to do one cog, three chainrings. But that would go better on a MTB setup than a commuter setup.

Thanks for the feedback. The White Industries Dos Eno is cool but I don't want to change manually. Sounds like single chairing with cassette mod would be easiest?

my vote is still for internal. it will look exactly like a single speed as you will have one chainring and one cog, but will have variant gears. three speed bikes used to be quite popular so i am sure you could salvage something for cheap, or find something new.

definitely. But at that point, why not use 8 or 9 gears, and give yourself even more choices? If you're going to have a derailleur, you might as well get all your use out of it.

Yeah I'm starting to realize I should just upgrade my current hardware and pick up a second frame to build an SS from. One bike isn't enough.
