Honestly, good strong wheels

I'm building up a gan well pro, not really looking to do deep v's even though i know they're tough and have been looking into Mavic OP and aeroheads. This bike deserves to be built up classy and tough and i want to know your opinions on some solid wheel set ups, etc. Keirin spacing.

DT Swiss RR 1.1 and 1.2 rims are cool, depending on how deep a rim you want. I know people who are very happy with them. I've been riding around the last few days on some Mavic Open Pros laced to Formula hubs that feel really, really good. I can't speak to their strength, as I haven't had much time to abuse them, but they ride flawlessly thus far. They also build up really nicely, too, if you're interested in building yourself. They come pretty straight, and get true very easily. Also, they're super light.

Just had DT 1.2's built up on Phil Wood hubs. The wheel ride great and they feel stiff enough and I'm 200lbs.

Mavic CXP33s, Araya Gold tubulars, Open Pros, and Aeroheads would all look classy on the bike. Get silver and polish it up to a mirror finish, ballin.

Mavic Ellipse on my old ride here: https://velospace.org/node/2934

- Really Light
- Really Strong
- 20 bladed spokes
- Clincher
- Relatively easy to find online or via any local bike shop.
- $400-$500 complete set
- They only come in Black (which is good or bad, depening on what look you are going for). Hub and rim stickers are easily removable.
- No bling which means not theft bait.

By big 250lb ***** rode a set daily in Baltimore for a long time. Never had to true them once. The previous owner was 185lbs and rode them daily for a year before I got them. Never needed to be trued.

How did the hubs spin, did they ever have any problems, and what'd you do about the 44mm chainline? I've been considering a set but may just do some Fusions, 32 or 28h instead because of the chainline thing. I'd be buying the wheels for racing as well as the street, though.

I never had any chainline issues on the Pista Concept as they were the stock wheel for the PC back then.

The hubs were solid and smooth. I, nor the previous owner, never had to service the hubs either.

I'm not a racer, but I understand them to be a good entry level wheel for racing. Anything nicer would have to be tubular.

For street use, they are tops. If you look at my bikes in my sig, I eventually bought a Deep V / Phil Wood wheelset. They were HEAVY as sh*t and too strong. Overkill. I wish I had kept the Ellipses.

I'm sure one can find wheels lighter or stronger than the Mavic Ellipse, but you will be hard pressed to find a set that has such a good balance of strength and weight for street use.

By the way, I never did tricks other than skidding (which isn't a trick). If you are into tricks, I would probably consider something else. The abuse I gave the wheels from from daily city commuting (rain, salt, potholes, lots of potholes etc...).

I'm not into tricks. They just look appealing to me because they're black, look clean w/o logos, legit for the track as a beginning wheelset, I can get them at a 25% discount, and likely a lot more aero for cheaper than anything I could build up myself.

Guess I just gotta find a mechanic that's experienced with them to sort out the chainline issue and possible lockring slippage I keep hearing about, because I'd be running 75's and can't think of any ISO BB that gives a 44mm.

It's indeed possible. I guess there's also the Phil Wood route.

Yea its 110mm. Also, a normal 10mm/9mm axle set up wont work with the track ends or the fork on this bike, but the only hubs I've found that will fit are Dura Ace. Any other suggestions, I'm not interested in shaving down the rear or front.

Phil Wood? Of course, you would have to be ready to drop some serious cash money on a BB, but I'd honestly rather have a Phil BB than Phil hubs.

I think Dura Ace and Novatech are your only options for brand new hubs in that spacing/axle. But you can always go the used route for classy keirin hubs in that spacing/axle. Sansin/Suntour/Dura Ace/Suzue.

25% off is nice!

I also never had nor heard of lockring issues. The lockring worked as expected.

Good luck with your choice.
