Should I get midge bars?

Well, those "Gary" bars from Origin 8 because they're a lot cheaper..They look real nice, shallower than drops but still give a more aggressive positioning than flat bars I currently ride.

I ride a Kona Paddy Wagon

I liked em when I tried them. They are rather wide, but you have a ton of hand positions. For the cost of the Gary bars, definitely worth it.

Midge bars are super comfy if positioned right. They are very wide, though, and certainly not an aggressive set up for road riding. They're just right for a cross set up for trail riding. A decent compromise for road cruising if that's what you're after.

I have the Gary's on my monstercross bike and I love them!

That being said, if you are used to regular drops or a cut-down flat bar on the street, they will seem incredibly wide. Also, it can be difficult to get the proper positioning with stem length and rise. There is a good article on Alt-bar setup in Dirt Rag #130, but I can't find the article online.

For the price, you can't beat the Gary's. If you're looking to have some fun on fire roads and light singletrack, they're the bomb. I would try to cop a ride on the road before I bought them if I wanted to use them around town.

I don't like the Gary bars. I've tried them on a bike in the bike shop, and the top flat is too narrow. I'd prefer Midge or WTB Mountain Drops. Can you even get the Midge bars anymore? Last time I tried nobody could get them.

Midges are better than Garys for the above mentioned reasons. I liked them on my Klein, but swapped out for Mary's because I'm a parts wh0re and I'm never truly satisfied with a setup. Pricepoint has both. I wish they were available in silver, because my Klein is built up a little bit more on the old school side, and had no black components on it whatsoever aside from the goddamn handlebars. It's also kind of strange that Origin8 labels their On One ripoff bars as "urban" bars when you see them on the trails like 99% of the time.

Sorry for the stream of consciousness style posting there. I'm kind of in another world right now.

Midge bars work most effectively when mounted high.

Good article about The Midge: https://www.63xc.com/mattc/midge.htm
