brooks seats

Are brooks saddles all that they are hyped up to be? Do they really get all that comfy after a while? or is just a fashion thing? Also what do you think are the best saddles around now for comfort?

crushkilldstroy 04-16-08 12:30 PM

Heavier than most.

Comfy for some.

Not comfy for others.

Apparently murder for cows.

Brooks for me, but everyone is different, some people hate them

Live2Die 04-16-08 12:50 PM

I feel more comfortable on my brooks than my couch. But they are heavy and don't look the best on some bikes (though they are the complete sex on many), spendy, if you are concerned with animal stuff it isn't a vegan option, and they do take a bit more care than some other saddles (ie you can't leave them in the rain all the time and may need to condition it occasionally though you can go without if you wish. I'm a huge fan for some of my more comfortable bikes and commuters but if my intent is to be fast and sleek I go elsewhere.

Probably not, they're leather - and leather is a touchy subject with those that don't like meat in their mouth. They look good, but I'm not convinced they're a fashion item.

I'd recommend a B-17 - the two I have are beautiful, I'd recommend them completely if you don't care about weight.

powers2b 04-16-08 01:21 PM

Hate them.
Ugly, heavy, and require special care, qualities I avoid when shopping for components.

brooks is murder

You're face is murder... and what? Sorry...

Anyway, is it really "murder"? I'll admit it's killing. But I never really hear somebody say, "oh man, this bear murdered five people at a campsite, this weekend". Maybe I'm just being semantical. Maybe Brooks is mauling, orrrrrr anhialation! Yeah, Brooks is anhialation! Tight.

conor 04-16-08 01:34 PM

quick technical note: saddles, not seats.

Aeroplane 04-16-08 01:34 PM

Brooks is over-rated. There are a tonne of other good saddles out there for every ass.

Murder is the unlawful death of a PERSON, cows are not people. Brooks doesn't slaughter cows specifically for their hides like the meat industry does for their meat. Brooks saddles are awesome, give it a rest!

It's murder to the people that consider the consumption of animal products murder. Not that I am one of those persons. Really though your analogy doesn't equate because the production of a saddle (and the subsequent death necessary for its creation) is done for an entirely different set of reasons than a bear killing humans. At least I assume so, the bear probably wasn't making them into saddles, of course if he was then it would change.

But whether or not either action is legitimate is relative to the person passing judgement.

in regards to the OP:

I would say my brooks saddle is significantly more comfortable than my other saddles, but I do not ride a fizik which is rumored to be the bee's knee's.

I wish I could find one. I've only been able to ride over a 100 miles on a Brooks or Belt leather saddle. I've tried a handful other saddles and none of them provide the comfort of well-worn leather. Plus, I scored 3 leather saddles (b-15, belt, and "mystery" saddle) for $2 each from an old dude (also got a old chrome tange fork (uncut) for $5).

QuickDraw 04-16-08 01:57 PM

Brooks is self-defense, you ever hear of mad cows?

clang.

If it works for you, that's great.

I just get sick of people saying they are the best thing in the world and that they are a magic bullet that cures cancer and keeps vampires at bay. Everybody's ass is different.

benjamin_s 04-16-08 02:54 PM

I bought a B-17 and when I first plopped down on it I was so incredibly pissed at my waste of 90 dollars. After about two weeks of riding, I guess it is the "breaking in period" I can safety say that it the most comfortable saddle I own.

Falkon 04-16-08 03:32 PM

Yes. I'm getting to test the new brooks with a cutout that cures aids.

jetbike 04-16-08 03:45 PM

Brooks are great. Whenever I'm on a long ride my legs give up long before my arse.

sp00ki 04-16-08 03:49 PM

probably from lugging around five extra pounds of dead skin...

fetch 04-16-08 03:50 PM

one thing i noticed when switching to a "regular" seat was the amount of power i lost in my stroke by not having a stiffer seat to pull up on my strokes. or maybe i have it wrong... but now having a stiff-base seat feels a lot better IMO. i loved my brooks but now i love my selle italia san marco gel!

I haven't had any vampire problems the entire time I've owned my Brooks saddle.

I also have a rock that keeps away the tigers. You don't see any tigers, do you?

jetbike 04-16-08 04:15 PM

sp00ki's here for an argument.

Have fun.
