OT: Keirin

Can someone explain to me why someone in their right mind would name their child Keirin?

Im just blown away by this.

Are there Japanese couples who name their kids Nascar or something?
Nope.

Nope.

Although Keirin is synonymous to bicycle track racing, it is not unique to bicycle racing. Google "Mr Keirin" and you'll find that Keirin could be a first name or a last name.

i knew of a girl in grade school whose name was keirin. not sure how it was spelled, but i doubt japanese track had anything to do with it.

where you see that? I've only seen Kirin.

Wotan 04-16-08 05:40 PM

What about Madison?

By the way the first time I was looking for bike parts in Japan. I went around to bike shops asking "Keirin wa arimasu ka?", except growing up in Australia I was pronouncing "Keirin" like "keer-r'n", 'cos that's how the bike race (and the person's name - it's not an unusual name at all where I live and has nothing to do with parents being into cycling) is prononounced in Australia.

Of course everyone thought I was asking if they had any Kirin (beer) so I got lots of funny looks and almost no bike parts. I realized my mistake on the last day.

Cynikal 04-16-08 05:40 PM

Maybe I had too much of it. :(

deathhare 04-16-08 05:47 PM

I believe the inspiration for the name was Keirin track racin'
Hence my confusion.
Maybe he'll pop in here.

Batson 04-16-08 05:52 PM

What are you talking about?
The dad is a fixed gear rider and lives in Philly. I forget his name.
Is it you?

andre nickatina 04-16-08 06:18 PM

A certain well-known messenger named his kid "Velo". Got a problem?

Kiran is already a well used name, who cares if someone adds a couple letters to it? Besides, we both know the Japanese don't even pronounce it like Kiran or Kirin.

skinnyland 04-16-08 06:19 PM

A buddy of mine has a sister named Kieran (it's not spelled like the race). I think they get it from Irish/misc. other Celtic heritage.

deathhare 04-16-08 06:21 PM

That settles it, I'm naming my kid....Skid Comp.

Wotan 04-16-08 06:22 PM

Yeah, I really don't think it's a big deal.

Anyway, I'm calling my son Tommasini.

Yeah, and why do parents give their kids names of ye olde English professions? Every time I meet a Cooper, Fletcher, Smith, etc, I wanna punch their parents.

deathhare 04-16-08 06:40 PM

The parents dont know any better really i guess.
In 200 years people will name their kids Crackhead and junk like that. :)

genericbikedude 04-16-08 06:41 PM

My neighbour who is like 3 is named keirin. She rides SS though not fixed. I also have a friend at school with the same name.

I think its an Irish/Scot thing.
