Rolled over something today hard, poked a hole through the tire, tube, and then dented the rim. This is ****ty.

Is the dent going to be that big of a deal? Its about a centimeter region on the top part (i dont know what its called, the two highest parts?). I put a new tire and tube on, but I'm not sure if this will cause future problems.

If this is going to cause more problems, what do you recommend? I prefer something cheap and durable rather than expensive/ultralight, or expensive/extra heavy.

Seriously so sad.

As far as I know, the dent shouldnt be a problem unless it's on the sidewall. I've heard of people riding rims with holes punched through them by nails.

i don't know about da28s but i know on my deep v's i've taken dents out of the sidewalls with pliers a few times just fine.

Once upon a time, I dented the **** out of a BMX 20in rim. The impact bent both sidewalls inward slightly. I ran two tires on there before getting rid of it because the sidewall of the tire kept bursting open. YMMV.

I dented my deep V on a really ****ty pothole. The guy at my LBS pulled it out and it's not even visible. He's got mad skillz, though.

I have some Alex DR13's (I think that's the model) that came on my roadbike, dented the crap out of the sidewall on a child eating pothole in downtown portland...

Bent it back with a crescent wrench and they've held up fine since (been about 4 months).

It is very hard for me to describe what part is dented.

Basically, if my rim was a half pipe, the tape would be the bottom, and this part would be the coping.

Yeah, that could be a deal breaker dent. If you can get it straightened out it should be ok, or if it's pretty minor you might be able to get away with it.

Are you saying the sides of the rim are bent inward toward the centerline of the rim, or the lip of the rim above where the tire bead seats is dented, like if you hit the rim with something?

How do you like the DA28's otherwise? I'm split between a Velocity Aero, DT Swiss RR1.1 and DA28 to replace my cracking mavic CXP22.

The way I'm interpreting this, the lip of the rim is dented, and I would assume it is dented inward. I would say use some pliers and straighten it out as much as possible and ride it till it dies.

It sounds like you have a sidewall dent? Can you take a picture? You probably could straighten it out and "ride it until it dies", but remember that your safety may be implicated in the rim's passing. The cheapest option (other than riding the damaged rim) is to replace the rim with the same thing. That way, you won't have to buy new spokes.

Personally, I don't like to take any chances when it comes to wheel failure. I recently replaced an open pro because I got an "extra spoke hole" from a screw and I didn't want to have to worry about whether my rim was going to crack on the next pothole.
