Depends a lot on foot size. I have MKS GR-9s with singles (ALEs) and they work really great. If you have wide feet, I don't recommend these pedals because they are super narrow (thus really awesome for clearance, I love em). Go with Sylvan tracks or something.

Do yourself a favor and get some good straps:

Any of these clips are good:

$40 straps would be nice, but might not fit in your budget after you buy some decent pedals. i recommend any mks pedal (sylvan, grp-9, etc), with mks clips and any cheap nylon strap. nylon straps work far better than cheap leather straps because they dont slip in the buckle as much, and they dont stretch as much.

pedalz?
you don't need pedals. the bike should be able to run off of pure, hardcore adrenaline.

I have these. https://www.jensonusa.com/store/produ...ill+Pedal.aspx
They're alright... No real complaints. Got them for free so that makes them way better.

I'm using Christophe toe clips and some nylon straps.

Does anyone have experience with MKS Sylvan Lites? I'm looking to replace my old Kyokuto road pedals and these look to be my best option, but the GR-9s get a lot more discussion.

I want to make my clips slightly longer, anyone got some tips to increase the space between the pedal and clip to make my foot sit more forward of the axle?

Honestly, you couldn't think of the common-sense solution yourself?

If not: spacers, obviously. Washers, nuts, whatever.

those ALE straps are crap. i've had a strap snap, and i've also the buckle explode.
and that's only from light use.

campy straps are so much better, but are also three times the cost.

I finally broke down under all the rivendell propaganda and switched from mks touring lites with clips and straps to odyssey twisted pc bmx platforms on the singlespeed mtb.

They're pretty alright.

I usually scope parts bins when possible for used pedals as well, you can find older "SR" branded pedals that are off brand suntour from what I've read, as well as older MKS pedals. As long as they still spin well (which many of them do) you are golden, usually for like 10 bucks.
As for straps, I get cheap leather singles from my LBS for like 10 dollars a pair usually.
