Tell me if this is a good idea
I have a nice road bike, but it isn't the prime choice for a casual ride with the wife and kids ...
So I'm thinking that a (forgive the terminology mistakes) single speed freewheel bike, probably with cyclocross tires, would make a fun, unique, and practical solution.
I love the simplicity and look of the ss/fixed gear bikes. I'd like the freewheel, though, and the larger cyclocross tires would be good, especially if we ride on some of the gravel trails in the area.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Sounds fun. And there's a few bikes out there that fit the description... IRO Rob Roy and Bianchi San Jose, to name a couple.

The right 27" frame will take a wide 700c wheel. Check SheldonBrown.com for the best how-to.

I wouldn't go with cyclocross tires unless you plan on riding in dirt and mud. Some large (32mm) touring or commuter tires will serve you better on pavement and can easily handle gravel and dirt.
