Hi, I'm looking into buying a frame or a complete fixie, whose fork is bent, from a friend. I was wondering if it'd be easier to buy a beater road bike or frame from craigslist, or buy new from a local bike shop or online.

Carbon sounds nice though, any recommendations, online websites, etc?

Also is there anything I should know, like measurements, before going on my hunt for a fork (Sorry, i'm just starting to get into bikes, and parts)?

[Side Question: anyone know where I can still get the extension levers, or safety levers, or suicide levers or dual-caliper brake levers? is the easiest way to buy a beater or clunker road bike with it, and take it off and attach it to the fixie? I want the retro look.]

to answer your question (i think) you don't need a new bike, you can easily swap out a fork... you need to know 4 things

1. is the fork threaded or threadless? threaded has threads on it (obviously) and uses a quill stem that sticks into the fork, threadless has a stem that clamps around the top of the steer tube

2. is the steer tube 1" or 1 1/8"? you can just measure this, it's the diameter of the steer tube

3. the length of the steer tube. it's commonly measured in millimeters

4. your wheel size. is it 27" or 700c? you need to get a fork that matches if you want to run a brake (usually)

with these 3 things you can get a new fork with no problem, it's just a matter of finding one you like at a price you want.

bent fork means a crashed bike
which means check the frame over for alignment, dents and ripples under the downtube/top tube at the headtube junction.

you might end up replacing more than just a fork.
