HELP-left foot and toe clips

HELP-left foot and toe clips
So I recently built up my second fixie...****ty old Panasonic but it is great for my commute to work and all my transportation needs.
My past fixie has platform pedals. I built this one up with toe clips to go brakeless.
I can't get my left foot in the pedal while in motion. I have Shimano 600 pedals that have the small lip to turn the pedal over, just can't seem to get my foot in.
Any suggestions.

1) Start with your left foot in the pedal then put in your right?

most of you have gone derailleur too 
I start with my left in the cage, near the top of the pedal stroke. I hop on and flip the right pedal over at the back of the stroke and slide my foot in as the pedal comes over top. Once you get the hang of it, it'll be second nature. Another thing that might help you get in- try keeping the strap really loose on one side, once you get your foot in you can reach down and give the strap a tug.
I start with my left in the cage, near the top of the pedal stroke. I hop on and flip the right pedal over at the back of the stroke and slide my foot in as the pedal comes over top. Once you get the hang of it, it'll be second nature. It honestly just takes practice shishi. I remember it took me about two weeks to get even fairly comfortable getting my toe into the clip at first.
How I do it is (slight variation on bombusben's method):
1) make the pedals parallel to the ground, left pedal forward.
2) step onto the left pedal and as the bike starts moving swing my right leg over the saddle
3) when my right foot makes contact with the right pedal I flick it (the pedal) backwards slightly so I can slide my toe into the clip
4) I put my weight on my right foot and follow step 3 again, only with my left foot.
It takes a little practice but works perfectly for me.
