OP - Getting back to the original question. I used a screwdriver to open the ring up a little bit and then used dishwashing fluid to give it some glide. You can then rinse off the dishwashing fluid without leaving a residue.

be careful when prying the brake lever open. it'll break *pun intended*

i broke my tektro *sp?* lever. what a waste of $20.

i finally found a clamp on lever that is hinged. worked great.

Since my questions got buried in the other thread by the flame war, I'll try here.

Tynan, what are the all white brakes that you used? Did you have those powdercoated also or did they come all white?

Does anyone know if the snafu c-lever (which is much cheaper than the Pauls and comes in a mostly white option) will fit on the 26mm part right next to the stem on a nitto bar?

That snafu lever looks like its pure BMX, which sounds like it will be 22.2mm -- no dice. Not sure though, could always give it a shot (they seem to be pretty cheap online, amazon has it for $16)

Also, Tynan posted what kind of brake he was running as well earlier on in the thread:

possible to slide an e-lever onto 26.4mm bars? I know they fit snug on 26.0mm; would 0.4mm make a difference?

tynan, that bike is amazing. i don't recognize that frame. but you did so much custom work to that bike and thats what i respect. the colors are not for me, but i understand why you would. people in here player-hating are just jealous that they can't do anything original and unique. powdercoating parts of your bike is a great effort.

In the future, just grease your bars, no need to pry open the e-lever clamp. That just seems like a great way to weaken the lever clamp. I got one on some pursuit bars just by greasing the bar and shimmying it on. Prying it open is absolutely not necessary.

No. The Paul E-lever will not fit on any bar over 24mm. I think it's actually specced for 23.8 maximum. If you try to get one on a 26.4 bar, you're just going to be wasting your money.

have you tried this yourself?

the e-lever diameter is 23.8mm and fit the diameter of 26.0mm bars (whatever the non-clamp diameter would be - not sure of this). I am just curious if the 0.4mm would be much of a hindrance.

I use a e-lever on a pair of 26.0mm bars. I used grease and slightly pried open the clamp with a screwdriver - it slide right on. I think it's possible to make the extra half of a millimetre, but I havent tried it yet. Has anyone tried it?

The reason this is a stupid idea is that your lever clamp is pried open all the time now to a size that is bigger than it should be used for. Do you try to fit bars that are too big for a quill stem by prying the stem open and using the bars as a means to keep the clamp widened? This method should be used to fit the right sized components more easily, not jam ill-fitting brake levers on bars it is too small to clamp around. The lever is aluminum, it's going to snap off instead of keeping it's shape like steel.

No I haven't tried it. I have more common sense than that. 23.8mm to 26 mm is not a .4mm difference. It's 2.2mm difference. 26.4 makes it 2.6mm.

actually, yes, I do slightly pry quill stems open to fit handlebars - matching sizes often do not slide in easily. Coins work great for this.

And you're incorrect. the e-lever does not rest on the bulge of the stem (what is measured at 26.4mm or 26.0mm) as you suggest, it rests on the non-bulge area of the shoulders which is a smaller diameter than the stem bulge. It all relative to the particular bar, but I'd say in general the difference of the shoulder where the brake would go is approximately 0.4mm. Now, whether or not the e-lever will safely fit less than half a millimetre larger than spec'd is up to trial - I was just asking if anyone has been able to do so without problems particularly with the criterium bar which may or may not have a smaller diameter than the normal diameter of 26.0mm/25.4mm bars.
