surly steamroller clearance question
just out of curiosity, are the tire clearances on the steamroller big enough to run 27" rims?

Since the 27" rim is 4mm higher at the brake caliper, there could be issues getting the brake shoes adjusted to hit the rim.
But if the brakes shoes can be adjusted, a 27" wheel will work. You just have to run a narrower tire (about 4mm narrower). For example: if the frame can fit 700Cx38, you should be able to fit up to 27x1-1/4" (about 32mm wide).

ok, so here's a related question:
how much does it suck to run 700c's on a bike designed for 27ers? i've heard it's ok, with some issues, blahblahblah, but i need to hear a definitive answer, if anyone is lucky enough to have one. =)

surreal- its doesnt suck at all.
If you run brakes, you might need a longer caliper or use a drop bolt. Either works without a problem.
If you have long cranks, you can't lean in turns as much. I've got 170's on a 27 frame w/ 700c right now and no problems.
You'll find a much better selection of wheels in 700c
You'll have extra clearance if you want to run fat tires or fenders
