when to change tires on a track bike

i have logged just over 2100 miles on the kilo tt =) (and it's still holding up...and im still alive!).
have about 200 miles riding with a front brake, only did a skidstop once....

everything on the bike is stock except for the pedals and new brake =).

im probably going to get new tires within the week - but what is the normal replacement period (w/o skidding, or any crazy abuse on the tires) on the stock kendas as well as the nicer tires.

and are gatorskins still Z best ones to get?

i like gatorskins, but there's no "best" tire - it depends on how you use a bike. for daily use with commuting and crappy roads, though, yeah, gatorskins are very reliable.

i replace my rear tire when skidding has rendered it no longer round. the profile becomes severely flattened. sometimes i start to flat a whole bunch. for front tires - i usually put on a front and forget about it for a long time. i'm riding a tire that i had three years ago. i don't think i've ever destroyed a tire from riding it on a front wheel, but if i get a new pair, i cycle an old front to the rear. never the other way around - it's rear tires that get the most abuse - flattening and punctures. replacement time.

sometimes i'll destroy a tire before i get to this point, but that's infrequent.

kendas burn pretty quick. are you out of tread? showing threads? i usually skid through mine before they have enough miles to worry about.

i'd say replace them... that's enough miles that you got your worth out of them. i think 3k is about the high end, 2k at the low.

I may get some continentals soon, would you recommend gatorskins? I will be using them for commuting mostly and long rides. I am still rocking my detonators and I have had the bike for a few months now.

huh? everyone skids on gatorskins... they arent that expensive either. i use them along with michelin krylions as my favorite tires. i use a brake with the krylions. for extreme skidding abuse i recommend vittoria randoneurs (heavy and thick).

Don't buy tires from anywhere other than www.probikekit.com

It is as simple as that.

edit: Oh damn, I am slow, Gyeswho beat me to it. I need another coffee

Why would you use anything but high quality tubulars on a track bike?

Is cigar city the nickname for some velodrome? Sorry I'm not familiar with that one...but why would a velodrome have a gutter anyway? Or do you mean the blue line and if so, why would riding on that require clinchers?

I ride nothing but Continentals on all my race bikes. GP4000 clinchers on the road, Podium tubs on the track (definitely not for normal road riding.)

Needless to say, I love Continental.

My commuter, though, does not have Contis. There are better street tires. I use Panaracer Pasela T-Serv 700cx28. Good tread, extremely durable, not prone to pinch-flatting, good grip, kevlar bead, pretty cheap.
