Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Hey! I am a newbie and have a question.

https://cgi.ebay.com/2008-NEW-ROAD-RA...QQcmdZViewItem

I am thinking about buying this bike and then convert it into a fixed gear.
Do you think I can make a fixed gear with this bike? or not?
(I heard that the drop-outs of the bike should be "horizontal", but this bike seems to have "vertical" drop-outs. So, I wanna know how you guys think.)
Please help!

its got vertical drop outs which means you can in theory make a single speed with a chain tensioner. my advice would be don't do it. wait until a frame/bike with track ends or horizontal drop outs comes along, then you could go fixed instead of single speed. its possible to do but you need to be prepared for it not to work first time over.

Why buy a complete bike only to strip the most expensive components off so you can convert it to fixed?

BD also sells frames with track ends, you know.

That add is for the frame and fork only. It also looks to be high ten so no way it's worth anywhere near $200.

Just cut the crap and buy a Kilo TT frame already. Not trying to sound pompous, but you might as well do your first bike right and get a frame with track ends. Spend $200 on a frameset and you won't have any worries.
