Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Playing with bikes.

So my daughter wanted to go outside and play. This means that she wants to run around with the dog and completely ignore me. She's not quite 2 so I have to be out there with her. What to do.....
I got out my bike, my SS mountian bike that is. I rode it up and down the driveway. I tried to do wheelies, I've never been able actually ride a wheelie. I still can't. I also practiced stoppies. It feels weird with the suspension fork but I probably did them better than I ever have. I practiced jumping up and down an 8 inch concrete ledge, fast slow, at an angle.
In short, I just played on my bike. Like when I was a kid and we used to do it for hours and hours in the summer. It was probably the best time I've had on a bike in a while. I love going for nice long fast rides on my fixie but that's a different kind of fun.
I'm definatly pulling my old Huffy BMX out of my parents garage when I'm home for christmas to see if I can make it work. Bikes can be so fun when you stop taking them seriously. I blame my new SS/fixie love for bringing the fun back into bikes, which is why I thought I'd share with you guys.

Know exactly what you mean. My fixies have dragged my butt out in weather this fall/winter more than I would have guessed. They beg to be ridden if only around the block.

Wait til you get the BMX bug proper. That Huffy will start you on a steep and slippery slope, once you discover the wonders of tricks

fun

I blame Harris Cyclery for this fixed gear madness. Sheldon introduced me a number of yeas ago and I now ride fixed gear exclusively. Stop me before I build another one.
