Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Skid Thread

I can skid stop, but I can only do it with my crotch fully on my stem, which gets annoying after a while and painfull. I see a lot of people who are able to skid even while they are seated. Are thier legs just stronger than mine or are the doing something differently? My gearing is a little on the steep side (48/16). Maybe this has something to do with it?

You don't go nuts-on-stem to stop. You do that for distance. To stop, you skid in quick, short bursts.

Yes, their legs are stronger, or maybe they have a lighter gear. Yours is a little steep, but lots of people (myself formerly included) ride higher and can skid fine.

48x16 not only means hard to skid but also 1 skid patch, get yourself a new ratio.

Are you talking about skidding for show or skidding instead of using a brake?

I can skid 49x16 seated, it's just technique and maybe some added leg strength from repition over time. Push the back thigh against the top tube for leverage.

plus one on the back theigh to top tube. the more you whip the bike the easier, and that will slow you down in a heartbeat

****. I remember BFSSFG being more interesting and informative. What happened?! Someone start an argument with Dutret, or something...

OP, get a friend to throw a stick into your spokes at high speed. You'll skid super-easy that way.

I will be the first to say it. Maybe dont read the skid thread if you dont care for skidding.

All of the best riders I know (for tricks) have 44/17 or 45/17 occasionally 46/17. I can not do that seated one you are talking about so no idea.
Your gearing is a bit heavy for sure. Get a 18/19T soma or EAI sprocket and chuck it on the other side of your hub, so you can swap between 'tricks' gearing, and 'riding fast' gearing.
(edited because what i wrote here was wrong)
And to make things much easier, not only put your balls towards your stem, but also try to bend your upper body over the bars, so your head is closer to the front tyre. This takes so much weight off the rear, and means you can skid at very low speeds. The guy who won the last skid comp at Osaka Castle last month didnt really use much speed at all, just had a very nice style, putting himself way way forward.

it also depends on how much you weight heavier dudes have a harder time skidding without moving their weigh forward
i.e. my friend ways 145# he has as much pressure in his rear tire as he weighs mush easier to skid
I weigh 210# guess what its harder to skid

You really should change your ratio, though. One skid patch is no good. If you went to a 48x17 you increase the number of skid patches you have by 17 fold.

or double that if you can skid with either food forward.

yeah i was kind of mad because i wanted a 43 chainring which gives you the most skidpatches in the most cog combinations(usually as many patches as your cog teeth) but i ended up with a 42 which has 8 with my 16t cog.

a 43t chainring should be every skidders' first upgrade.

I'm not complaining about the ****ty quality of this thread topic, I'm just pointing out that there's no need to start identical threads week after week. Why do you think so many of the OGs quit posting here, more or less?

OGs are by definition too cool for school.

besides, the less people post here the more chance they'll be out riding a bike. so that's a good thing.
