Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

so here we go

i am looking for an entry level, meaning i am short on cash, fixie. i would buy an old ten and rebuild it, but every bike i go look at has a bunch of rust, bent frame or the person selling the bike thinks that because people are looking for older bikes to fix up that they think they can charge up the nose. anyway.....any advice would be appreciated. i live in santa barbara and would dig on keeping my mountain bike for the mountain and have a fix for my commute.

thanks

michael

Get a Mercier Kilo TT and get on with life. You can buy the full bike for around $350.

www.bikesdirect.com then click the hour. it's $299 shipped to your door.

But im going to say don't buy that and support a good company like IRO. www.irocycles.com for just a little more you get a hell of a lot more in both the bike and the customer service, you can actually call up Tony and get help unlike bikesdirect.com

I tried to follow your link and irocycles.com doesn't actually exist. I'm assuming you meant https://www.irofixedgear.com/

I have a Peugeot sprint frame, that's in awesome condition that I'm trying to get rid of.

Send me a PM if you're interested, and I'll take pictures.

Just ride your mountain bike to commute. Nothing wrong with that and won't cost you money.

My son and I are building a fixie for him, and we started with a very nice Bianchi he got for free. Parts cost so far is approaching $400 (over half of that for wheels/tires), and we're being fairly careful. It is only justifiable because it's a nice Italian frame, in great shape, and he'll have something very special.

But I've asked myself more than once, why didn't I just buy something from bikesdirect or craigslist. Saw a great Fuji (old frame) in the SF craigslist last week, fixed up really well for about $400 or so.

At this point, I'd only start on an old bike if there were something unique about it (an old Raleigh, for example), and I could reuse a lot of the parts, including wheels.

Check this out - someone gave it to me, I reused the wheels and I've only got about $150 into it, almost half of that being the tires. This is a single-speed, not a fixie. This worked out very well I think, and now I ride this one more than all my other bikes combined. Scroll down to the last pic.
