Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? No, hold your yays. I've not been to all the places on the list, but I find it hard to believe Montreal is #4. The city has made small improvements here and there, but it's still a bad place for cycling even on the N. American scale of ****tyness--it gets a bump, I suppose, if you weigh mountain-bike and "scenic" trails more heavily than utilitarian/safety stuff.

In fact, this whole list should be called "the least ****ty places to ride in n. america" as opposed to the "most bike-friendly cities." It gives the false impression that a city in North America can be bike-friendly.

yeah that's a good point.

i never thought about being overly-bike friendly and having bike 'traffic' so to speak along trails and bike paths. that's just crazy, haha.

I like Niagara Falls. No body rides, which means I don't have to worry about people riding the wrong way through traffic.

How is San Diego #3??? I dread riding here whenever I come back home from college. Everything is spread out, public transportation is ****, and the amount of d-bags in lifted trucks and oblivious suv drivers are a lot higher.

+1... d-bags headed out towards Santee, Lakeside and El Cajon.

And finally: "The city of 1.2 million is flat..."

On the tops of the congested mesas or the bottoms of the valleys maybe...

I grew up in San Diego and have lived here in San Francisco for the last 8 years. there is no chance in hell SD is more bike "Friendly" than SF.

Or Mpls for that matter, I used to live there and back then it was a dream (for a kid at least lol). For some types of riding SD is very nice, but bike friendly...? Not at #3 above most of the places listed above it.

San Diego averages more than 250 sunny days a year. That in itself makes it more bike friendly than most places.

it's also usually really temperate, like 70 degrees.

i am a wimp when it comes to hills and sf scares the hell out of me.
