Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Idk, bigger bike would probably look ridiculous because I'd need like a -20 stem or something.

I do need wider bars though

Giro di SF, wish I did better, but I got a couple sweet pics out of it

A GREENER FILM

Gateway Cup, 4-day series over labor day weekend. Was able to get my Cat3 upgrade. Lots of fun.

Congrats! Did you earn points, or do the 10 top 10's thing?

Points. Won 2 of them, got a 3rd and got 4th. I've almost completely ignored road racing because track was always my focus and, up until this year, I was riding a steel Merckx. Getting a modern carbon frame with some china wheels made an insane difference when coupled with the geometry changes and confidence from more experience turning. My biggest problem was not being assertive enough and then drifting back and surging forward in the peloton.

Pretty pumped on crits for now but I know I'm going to get shredded in the higher cats come next year.

Awesome, congrats @GMJ! I had a similar season in 2011 with two wins, a couple seconds and a few other high places. Welcome to "the ultimate category" .

My agenda in racing these days is to make it fast, safe, fun and positive. I'm part of a big team with lots of participation at all levels and so there is always someone moving up the ranks that I can assist. 9/10 times we have a plan, and it usually involves (me) attacking, covering moves, pulling hard on the front and shepherding other riders. It's what I like to do.

Winning is great but I seem to have lost the same killer instinct that I had when I was winning as a 4/5 (in college), and frankly I'm a different person. I think a lot of it is because I want to be one of the stronger ones in the race and that's not realistic for me at the 1/2 level.

I've always gotten as much fun (as winning) out of being a team player and mentor, which seems to be enough to keep me excited about participating and being in shape. I'm one of the more experienced guys at this point and I like to lead by example.

Rode the Door County century yesterday. Beautiful day and a really well-organized ride. Moving time was 6:35 so ~15mph pace. 2,400ft climbing which is a bit for flat Wisconsin. It was my second century and first for my girlfriend (and first ride on the new bike). Definitely doing it again next year.

gearing up

stretching at mile 50, enjoying the view

encouragement at the far-point rest stop, mile 64

she's still smiling

post-ride meal and obligatory screening of the Packers game

Nice. I wish they had more of that in SD... have to drive to LA for it. I'd love to try it though!

Just start a series. That's not hard right?

I haven't participated in any or even watched much road or MTB racing to know how it compares, but all the talk about cross being welcoming, great for spectating, family friendly and a ton of fun holds true around here.

And I'm sure you'd do well being a fast road rider and having a background in MTBing too.

The photo makes it look like you are missing half a leg.

Unlike everyone else, you actually do look like your avatar.
