Havn't biked in years.
Between the ages of 15-18 I went through a phase where I just wasn't active, I'm now 20 and have been slowly taking up some past hobbies. Rock climbing, hiking and kayaking. I had mentioned wanting to ride again to a friend and he immediately bombarded me with videos of fixed gear bikes. Obviously, I'm very intrigued.
The question is, not having biked in a while, should I buy a single gear until I get used to riding again or should I go straight to the fixed gear to avoid forming habits that don't apply?

Get a fixed gear bike with a flip-flop hub, where it's fixed on one side and singlespeed on the other. This way, if you don't like the fixed gear aspect, just flip the wheel over, and voila.

I have a flip-flop hub. I'm running single speed right now, with front and back brakes. Safety first! Now to invest on a helmet.
