Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Do I need a new bottom bracket?

When I start to pedal hard sometimes a hard skip will come into play.

not to mention it sounds like someone is stepping on pebbles when I pedal, as well.

Could your cog just be slipping? Tighten that up, and you probably have to much chain tension, or your chain is dry if your drivetrain is noisy, or if your cog and chainring are new that could be it.

I'll try to lube things up and give it a little tighten.

Your chain and/or cogs are probably shot. When the teeth wear enough the chain slips over them, causing the hard skip. Replace your drivetrain.

But why are you posting this here anyway?

Noises from a bike are difficult to pin-point and when you think you've found it, it might be coming from a totally different place. Try here: https://sheldonbrown.com/creaks.html

Recently my mountain bike started making a terrible ticking noise. Thought my handlebars were the cause. Turns out I just needed to grease my seatpost.
