No, what happens is the pedal comes back around and pushes up on your leg harder than you might expect it to. the force can easily get you off your seat, and then off the bike.

I was aboslutely hauling ass on my first real ride with my Fisher Triton. Spinning all out at about 25mph. I came to a rough stip along a bridge and attempted to do a little hop that i've done on my road bike a hundred times. Didn't work out so well. By an act of god somehow I didn't fall of the bike. The chain popped off and I bucked wildly. Just about **** myself. Scarriest moment ever on a bike for me. I went home and cried.

instantly. i had no problem remembering that i couldn't coast.
the only time i've had a semi-problem is the first two times i went over large bumps. i stood up off of my seat to make it smooth as possible, but my pedals reminded me i couldnt do that anymore. no near crash though, just kinda felt funny.
