Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

New to fixed gears - bike build

Hello everyone. I am new to the forums and new to fixed gears. I was going to buy one of the new surly steamrollers but they are sold out . Instead of waiting I decided to build my own bike. I was searching craigslist and found a 80 something Panasonic road bike. It's got a good bit of rust here and there but is dent free. I figured this would be a good opportunity to learn a bit about bikes and customize it along the way.

Tell me what you think:

I'm going to get it sandblasted and powdercoated this weekend. If anyone has some good resources feel free to post them up

I'll hopefully have some new pictures this weeknd

haha, yeah. I am located in Venice. I just picked it up tonight. I was just talking to my roommate about it. Im not sure if it is chromoly steel, so it might be too heavy/weak of a frame, so instead of dumping money into the frame for powder coating etc, we're going to sand it down and spray paint for now. I'll put good money into some wheels and components though and possibly update the frame once we get it running.

Those randonneur bars are the most comfortable things ever. If you go with horns or flat bar instead, you should definitely send them to me!

So you're the one who snagged that bike! LOL I must have e-mailed the seller only minutes after you. Did you take a look at the other bike he was selling? I agree with the others, try and restore it. Looks like she'll clean up really nice
