Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Gear & skid patch calculator for the iPhone

Just thought I'd do some shameless self promotion and share this - since the app is free (for now), I think it's OK.

to see it: www.jpmartineau.com/iphone/bicycle-gear-calculator

to install it: www.tinyurl.com/bikegears <= will open iTunes.

Get it while it's free.

Hope this will help to solve my-gear-ratio-is-bigger-than-yours disputes.

This should go into the resource thread, if I had an iPhone, I'd get it. Very cool.

I agree, I was hoping there was a way to do it but if there is I can't figure it out. I still have to use the google maps pedometer thing. I heard they are coming out with some new navigation programs for the iphone but nothing bike/walking centric.

Oh and to the original poster, very cool program. I just downloaded it. Not sure how often I'll use it but it's always nice to have it just for the hell of it.

Nice app. I'm installing it now. If one could make a request for future updates, the magic gear calculater would be a great addition to this. Nice job.

sorry, doing so could get me kicked out of the developer program (that would violate the SDK's EULA), and I need that for my work.

Sorry.

The magic gear calculator ( http://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php ) will give a set of gears that fit a certain chainstay length without a tensionor. Kind of handy when building a ss/fixed with a frame with vert dropouts.

The application looks great!

Kind of strange though to have such a thing portable.
unless.. well i guess it's okay if you're out at the shop and about to buy some cogs or chain rings.

Thanks, I'll read up on that and see if I can squeeze that in somewhere

Sorry to hear about that.

Before the application crashes, do you see the pickers getting populated with Gear numbers and crank lengths or are they empty? Does it sometimes launch or does it crash every single time you start it?

Also, do you have problems with other applications or is the Bike Gear Calculator the only one causing problems?

If you can tell me which firmware version you have, that would be useful. There are two different iPhone firmwares out there; if you have firmware 5A345, that may be the cause of the problem.

Read this article to find more about the firmware issue: http://www.appleinsider.com/articles...w_screens.html
"Although clicking "Check for Updates" in iTunes continues to reveal no new firmware, touching "Restore" installs firmware two builds newer than what was loaded on to the new iPhones in the factory, bumping them from 5A345 to 5A347.

[...]

Separately, reports have also been received by AppleInsider that the newer build may also fix recurring app crashes experienced by some users, though this may also be due to the nature of the restore process rather than any particular updates in the 5A347 build."
I had a report from a user being unable to start the app and a few hours later, he emailed me this: "I set it down. Came back couple hours later & it works fine!". Now, I have no idea if he shutdown/restarted the phone, but he didn't seem to do anything in particular to fix the problem.

My best guess is that the current firmware is somewhat unstable and a lot of things (including applications crashing) will get much better with the next firmware update.

I will be posting updates on this page as soon as I figure out what's going on. If you had problems and got it working, please let me know what you did.

It should work on the iPod Touch. See above reply (the iPhone's firmware issues apply to the iPod).

Which Patch? Apple didn't releases anything AFAIK. Did you install the app before or after patching?

See the above reply.

Hey, thanks for the fast help.

On my touch the app opens every time, but there aren't numbers in pickers and it wont let me select any of the other parts of the app like skid patches, speed, tire size....ect. Then it closes after about 1-2 sec

Everything should be current on the touch though because I had to update the software before loading the app, I think it was 2.0. And part of the process was the restore so I'd assume it loaded the latest firmware, not sure though.
