Budget Minded Moving To Boston

Good chance I am headed east to further my education and was looking for some help.
I currently reside in Chicago and think I might end up out there in Sept. Since I will be in school I am not looking to spend alot(800$rent)... Is this possible? I currently ride daily and long distances of the flat lands of the Chi... I am flexible on the neighborhoods, I currently live in Humboldt Park, so I am used to the everyday trials of my truck being stolen, hoodrats, Ectt.. but, I enjoy some troublemaking in the nearby hipster hoods. Help me out with some ideas. I saw a similar topic but guy was able to spend alot more...Thanx for your time....

East Somerville, the neverland between Somerville and Cambridge (along Prospect St. between Union & Inman Squares), Roslindale, Roxbury, Mission Hill, Allston-Brighton, Dorchester, Mattapan. Everett and Medford aren't quite so accessible or lively, but they're pretty close and quite a bit cheaper.

$800 will get you a lot of places if you're willing to go smaller or have a roommate. Hit up boston.craigslist.org.

you can live in jamaica plain for like $400/month but you'll have roommates. East Boston is also really cheap, but I think it's full of scum. $800 will get you a studio in somerville.

The problem with Eastie is that you gotta go through Chelsea to get into the city by bicycle unless you take it on the Blue Line which is only allowed during off-peak hours.

Heck...I'll be your roomate.

Im looking to go to Jamaica Plain. Or Alston...Im currently looking in the 385-425 price range and I've actually come across quite a few. If you're looking to live on the cheap those are two decent areas. What school are you going to?

check out brighton.. especially if you have rooommates. prices on places here have been really low lately and if you look around enough youll find an awesome place. me and some people just got a beautiful single family house with a huge back yard, drive way, etc. im paying $400. 15 minute ride to downtown.

Yo, thanx for the ideas.. Its is relieving to see that I have more options than I previously thought. I'll be coming out there soon for a visit. I will be going to BAC on Newburry.. I know very little about the city, but I am anticipating a change of scenery. Even though the ladies are coming out in force right now in the Chi.. I also have a big truck that I would use out here from time to time, and I am debating whether or not I should bring this bad boy with me, From what I have heard it can be rather difficult to park out there.. Im gonna check out some of the areas you fellas have suggested for me, and I appreciate the comments.....

Don't bring the car. It's probably not worth it given the cost of insurance and parking hassle and expense. Plus is it new enough that it will pass emissions?

Pretty much everything is accessible by public transportation, but it would be a lot faster if you were on your bike. I say, leave your truck. Parking is very difficult and the fines are expensive and it's definitely not worth it. Since it is Summer, just ride your bike to you're destination; just buy a solid lock or two.

Cambridge will cite you. Boston won't. Your payback is when you get creamed by cross traffic.

Every shop here is track specific.

For the budget concious, hit up Broadway Bike School in Cambridge or Bikes Not Bombs in Roxbury. For your Armadillo needs, hit Community Bike Supply. For IRO, check out Cambridge Bicycle and Boston Bicycle. For nice stuff, hit Ace Wheelworks in Somerville or ATA Cycle in Cambridge. And of course there's the shop where Sheldon Brown works in West Newton, Harris Cyclery. They have all sorts of random crap if anyone can find it, or so I hear from someone else who works there.

And then there are the other shops. Plenty to choose from.
