OT: College student costs
So this is obviously an OT thread, but how much money would you say the average college student spends on beer/other things a week? I have people telling me anywhere from $30-50, would you agree?

$30-$50 sounds about right to me.

I think I was spending $40-50 a week on booze, broads and drugs. But it was the 80's.

Im not going to drink/smoke (i say that but who knows) im living on campus at a small liberal arts college (Illinois Wesleyan) with about 2,200 students at it. I am just trying to get an idea of how much i can be "saving" by not doing illegal stuff (which i don't do now, have but not really for me) i like going out but am more social and can do it w/out drinking. Right now i have a friend that spends over $130 on stuff a week...

dont spend 30-50 a week on booze
im assuming you will be a freshman, and therefore you wont be going to bars. all grocery store purchases. 20 bucks a week for booze will be plenty for a whole lotta fun.

Save your money to buy good weed. That way, even though you'll have less money for beer, you won't need as much, because you'll get hella crossed and ****ed up. Also, buy good beer.
But yeah, when I had a job, I was blowing through $70 a week probably on beer and weed. Now that I'm unemployed and running off of money I saved from then (when I realized I wouldn't have a job for much longer, I started saving like a madman). I'm down to $0-50 a week. Let's call it $25/week.
But I'm lucky. My parents cover room and board and I didn't have to take out too much money in loans to be here. I don't think I could, in good conscience, go back to spending that much on hedonistic fun again, even if I were employed.

Living on campus you won't need to spend too much on food. I spent maybe $20 on food, and my roommate was the "generous guy with weed" so I hardly spent on that. So maybe $25-30 a week was my budget, spent mostly on burritos.

Well, I would buy a twelve-pack of crappy beer and a sixer of microbrew per week. That adds up to $20. Maybe $10 at the bar per week. And $45 every other week for weed, except when I wasn't smoking for a while. I graduated in December 2006. When I was under 21, I rarely bought booze; I just got the stuff for free at parties.
This thread is silly.

HIGH FIVE! ALRIGHT! Another straightedger on this board!!!!!
I'm _NOT_ going to get into the booze and weed discussion because I will make very few friends and many enemies debating that, but let's say you expand your spendings on what you have. Sometimes I'd have $15 to my name and could live with a functioning bike and a meal plan just fine. Other times I had $600 that went to bike parts, shopping sprees at American Apparel, and so on. The big thing is to take advantage of your school's "school only money" that gets put onto your account and you can spend anywhere around campus. Bonus: if you have a loans or financial aid you can get this money put on your tuition and billed through financial aid.

Living on campus is MUCH cheaper. In Philadelphia at Temple you pay about $5000 a year for room and board -- good luck getting by in any apartment on that little amount. Where you end up paying is the Freshman 15... or 20... or..., when you take advantage of fried food at fourth meal and too much soft ice cream and have to burn it all off during the summer.

If you just want to get drunk--like if your job is really stressful, it's Friday, and you did a ton of tests/homework the past week--drink Boone's Farm. It'll do the job. But, do not skimp on your beer. Drink well made, expensive beer. The lowest I'll ever go in quality is either Sam Adams Cherry Wheat/Summer Ale or Landshark. Liquor is for forgetting, beer for enjoying.

I forgot to mention that Boone's Farm is $2.50 a liter. Plus, Wikipedia states that it's for the poor, homeless, and college students.
Oh the day's of being straight edge. Those days were cheap.

I am hard-line about no exceptions to the rule (and no caffeine) but I am not militant. If I see someone drinking or smoking I will not beat them up or verbally bother them. I do not push what I think on others, or else I'd be making wild claims about how drinking is impure and wrong in this thread.
All I _will_ say is that drinking under 21 in the US is _ILLEGAL_ regardless of your stance on the law, and if you are caught doing it on-campus or in nearby housing you will have a rough next morning with mom and dad. Get caught again and you will have a rough time with your university.
