Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I'm tired of seeing **** about Michael Phelps. I went to school with him, so when he first went to the olympics, they had this big ceremony for him and stuff, and we even watched him swim during class. Blah blah, hes good, we know.

So who decided to have the olympics in China? Not saying the U.S. deserves it anymore but couldnt they have picked someplace where people werent getting stabbed to death, media agreements werent being violated, pollution wasn't a significant impact, and no algai infesting the waters created from suspected untreated sewage... It's just all kinda bumming me out. Anyways feel free to rip me a new one China supporters.

Yeah, no one gets stabbed to death in the USA.

BTW, the USA decided to have the Olympics in China after they gave us 3 trillion dollars.

My point was people get stabbed in the U.S. too... U.S. might not have been any better, ecspecially seeing how as we have done the same **** with oh say the La olymipcs in terms of polution. Isn't it the IOC composed mainly of europeans that decided? Anyways I dont really care thought it would just be a good statement to get some people riled up.

Oh and couldnt tell if you knew but one of the coaches from a usa team's family member got killed...I dont think that last sentance made any sense.

On the issue of stabbing, do you really think it was more than a poor, lost soul looking for some last-ditch attention? The fact that he killed himself by jumping off a two-story building afterwards should tell you that it was not an act of anti-Americanism or any protest. Just a dude looking for five minutes of fame.

Either way, I still support the Olympics. Perhaps China is a little premature for the games. Perhaps it will act as a catalyst for change, or perhaps it will expose them as worthless phonies. There are still two weeks left and the impact of the games there will not hit until long after.

My opinion is the games should have gone to a country on the brink of becoming a modern country but needs an extra boost. Some Eastern European nations or Brazil specifically. Tokyo is on my A-list for 2016, mainly because I just want a good excuse to go there.

One of the more intelligent comments on the topic.

One only has to compare the human and economic condition of China 30 years ago and China today, and you would understand the influence and benefit this country will provide globally. Although human right in China still creates dramatic smoke swirls in the air, it is far better than the past. The growth, prosperity, and the ability to run individual businesses for economic competition are some of the essential phenomenon that drive the human spirit. Under Mao's order and communism, the individual spirit was dead; now, one has the freewill and is able to nurture the spirit to become better.
