SE Lager 08 and tires
 

Ive got an SE lager ive been riding for a few months now, and am just curious whats some of the biggest tires you guys have gotten on their. I mean its got the 28-622, im looking to put some studded tires on it and i think the closest thing i could find was something like 32-622? any suggestions for tires and rims?

I probably will once it gets closer to winter. Only problem is most of them dont carry any studded tires and most of the ones that carry the road bikes im looking for only sell spandex shorts and reflectors, I can check out the hub soon enough though.

Just to be a little bit more long winded, a 28-622 is a 700x28 tire. How much clearance do you have between your seatstays and your existing tire? If you're planning on running these as winter tires, you can actually get away with a tighter clearance than if you were planning on running them in the mud. Tires slide through caked up snow a lot easier than they do with caked up mud.

Different brands also end up with slightly different tire widths on the same numerical size from time to time. It's really just a lot easier to test fit, but if you supply a photo or some numbers we could probably guesstimate for you.

And what's wrong with lycra and reflectors?

Id say i have a good five MM on the sides and closer to a good 7mm on top of the tire.

I have a Dawes SST which has the same frame & wheels. It looks like there clearance for 32mm tires, but the Alex rims are only 14mm wide. It's generally advised not to go any wider than 28mm on a 14mm I.D. rim, but I don't know how conservative that is.

So would you recommend going with a little wider rims? like the bare minimum to get those 32mm

I'm not really sure. I'm in the same boat as you. 700x32 would be nice, but it's not worth it to me to buy new rims. If I can get away with it on these rims, then I'll give it a try.

Hmm,, well I should be riding most of the winter here in minnesota, Id like to hear how that goes for you! cause id rather not get new rims also, but if i have to, ill do it.
