Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Wanting to try a fixed mtb ... outcast or monocog?

I think I wanna get a 29er and it seems like the outcast and monocog are the only ones in my price range at the moment. I will probably end up using it as a ss but I would love to try a fixed mountain bike (maybe I will like it as much as my regular fixed bike). That said the reviews of the monocog seem to be a bit better than the outcast if one is looking for a stock bike ready for trail riding (which I am). Rigid steel also makes more sense to me than rigid alu. If I want to go fixed though the outcast comes with a flip-flop hub. Thoughts on the choice.

I have a Peace 9er fixed with no brakes that gets a fair amount of use on the trails. Gotta go slow sos not to slide though. Fix offroad is a hoot but a little tougher IMHO. No opinion on the other rigs though, I have no experience with them.

I was actually gonna pose this exact same question only just a genearal... "opinions on budget friendly 29ers particularly single speeds, anyone have any experience with the Marin hamilton 29er or for that matter the muirwoods 29er (although not SS) or the new IRO I9?
I'd ideally like a disc brake setup are there any options for that in the sub $500 range?

redline. If you are going to go rigid, my choice would be steel 99 times out of 99.

here is mine setup fixed.

I have 165's on there. I think crank length makes a difference offroad for obstacle clearance
