Finished my first custom paint & build - PICS
Last night I did the final assembly on my custom single-speed conversion. Over the weekend I stripped the frame and re-painted it, including detailing the lugs by hand. I kept the original fork, stem, pedals, and brake calipers.
Everything else I replaced, with:
-- Sugino 75 track cranks, chainring, and bottom bracket
-- SRAM single-speed chain
-- 18 tooth rear cog with a Wheels Mfg. single-speed spacer kit
-- 700c Mavic MA-2 rims, Shimano freehub
-- Ritchey Tom Slick city / touring tires
-- Race Face MTB flat bar w/ Specialized grips
-- BMX 2-finger brake levers
-- CCM Pro retro vintage seat
I rode it to work today and it was soooo smooth! Rides like a dream now. The steel frame handles NYC streets so well, better than my aluminum Trek.

i don't like yellow and red, but i am thoroughly impressed by your paint detail.
1) did you clearcoat it?
2) if you don't already have a career/something to take up your time, you should consider getting a site and doing this as side work. you can probably make a ton of customers doing this for cheap for a few months, then for expensive once you build a rep. people love conversions, and would adore an inexpensive way to make them not look jank.
3) why no red on the bottom bracket?

wow man, thank you! i respect your posts on here a lot, so the compliments are an honor!
1. yes, i put a whole can of clear coat on it (dupli-color). still, i have to admit i've learned my lesson that powder-coating is more durable. luckily i have a powder-coat hookup for the future.
2. i do actually have two jobs already, in the music biz, so i don't think i'll be doing this beyond a hobby. also, I'd need my own bike garage to do this properly. i've been at Times Up!'s co-op twice weekly for 2 months now, and my tiny apt. is full of bikes and parts. and i have a new girlfriend to lavish attention on, instead of a bike project. ....that said, i am already looking for another used frame to start my next build.
3. i didn't paint the BB because I figured it would get scratched up too fast. the lug paint is less durable than i hoped so i decided to keep it to more protected areas of the bike.
